Dear Friends,

Already the end of January? Winter is upon us in earnest here in the Northeast. Even if you live in a gentler clime, what could be cozier than curling up with a good book this time of year? Wondering what to read?
We've got suggestions; call us!

The Snow Man
By Wallace Stevens

One must have a mind of winter
To regard the frost and the boughs
Of the pine-trees crusted with snow;

And have been cold a long time
To behold the junipers shagged with ice,
The spruces rough in the distant glitter

Of the January sun; and not to think
Of any misery in the sound of the wind,
In the sound of a few leaves,

Which is the sound of the land
Full of the same wind
That is blowing in the same bare place

For the listener, who listens in the snow,
And, nothing himself, beholds
Nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.

(With thanks to Gertrude Hughes, who introduced me to this poem.)
What's Happening in the Library

The new year brought new volunteers: Welcome and thanks to Elia Gilbert and Meaghan McKenna-Coffin! If you'd like to join the crew, we still need assistance transferring the contents of cassette tapes to MP3 and DVD formats, a task you can do at home.

Are you aware of important books and other works we might have missed that would enhance the collection? Please let us know! We welcome your suggestions.

For those who read German, a reminder that the library subscribes to Das Goetheanum, and issues are available for lending. Contact us for other journal titles, such as New View from Great Britain, and Renewal from the Association of Waldorf Schools in North America.

New Books & More

Donehower book
SancXtuary: A Novel, by Bruce Donehower, Xlibris, 2012, 730 pgs.
Fred Dennehy calls this full-fledged page turner "a rare specimen  of the 'anthroposophical thriller'." Read a complete review by Jane Hipolito in the upcoming issue of Being  Human.

Wildgruber book
Painting and Drawing in Waldorf Schools:
Classes 1-8, by Thomas Wildgruber, Floris, 2012,
384 pgs.
A comprehensive guide for teaching painting that includes 280 practical exercises, and more than 800 examples of children's drawings and paintings. This will surely take its place as a fundamental resource beside Margrit Jnemann's classic Drawing and Painting in Rudolf Steiner Schools (1994), also available from the library.

Lindenberg book

Rudolf Steiner: A Biography, by Christoph Lindenberg, trans. Jon McAlice, SteinerBooks,  2012, 816 pgs.

This major biography by an anthroposophical historian presents Steiner's intentions and efforts in the context of his time and life circumstances, relating not only what happened, but also why. "His work does not, as in many modern biographies, disappear behind the life story." We have two copies, and both are currently checked out. We'll be happy to reserve one for you.

These are just a few of the new items recently added to our collection! See more on the homepage of the library's online public access catalog.

We continue to seek your support for our efforts to make this stellar collection more widely available.
