PM for Social Good®

Greetings!

Happy New Year!  We're excited to sustain the momentum of 2013 as we enter 2014 with plans for innovative programs that showcase the value of project management.  We've already begun to strategize and to implement several exciting activities that you'll learn more about in the coming months.  These include a new PMIEF Web site, enhanced training opportunities and, of course, support for initiatives that strengthen teaching and learning worldwide.  After all, to us "PM for social good" means touching people's lives in ways they can recognize and appreciate.

PMI volunteers around the globe like Paola Morgese, PMP and Edoardo Grimaldi, PMP of the PMI Southern Italy Chapter (PMI-SIC) share this sentiment.  This month's newsletter highlights their facilitation of a seminar in Naples, Italy to showcase the PMI Project Management Methodology for Post-Disaster Reconstruction (PMMPDR) as an important disaster management resource.  Their efforts correspond with those of the newly formed PMIEF Disaster Management Task Team, which we also highlight this month.  In addition, you'll learn how you can nominate either yourself or someone you know for The Kerzner Award, an honor that recognizes outstanding achievement in the profession with a prize valued at nearly US$ 10,000.

Get ready for a fantastic year -- this is only the beginning!

Sincerely,

Your Friends at PMIEF

PMI Southern Italy Chapter Leads Disaster Reconstruction Seminar

Chapter volunteers introduce PMIEF resource to practitioners, professors and students

PMIEF dedicates resources to develop and to deliver project management-oriented solutions for disaster management challenges worldwide.  This includes the dissemination of the  PMI Project Management Methodology for Post-Disaster Reconstruction (PMMPDR)  (2005), a framework that helps individuals and organizations implement reconstruction projects when disaster strikes.  The PMI Southern Italy Chapter (PMI-SIC) recently facilitated a seminar at the University of Naples Federico II in Naples, Italy to introduce this PMIEF resource to practitioners, professors and students.

Paola Morgese, PMP, who previously served as the first knowledge management leader of PMI's Global Sustainability Community of Practice, had the idea to create the seminar after she voluntarily translated the PMMPDR into Italian for PMIEF.  "Unfortunately, in my country disasters are very common and frequent, both natural and manmade.  This is why I thought to organize a seminar about post-disaster reconstruction [project] management," she said.  Her collaboration with PMI-SIC and Department of Engineering Professor Mario Pasquino enabled seminar participants to deepen their understanding of project management and its relevance to their field.

Pasquino, Morgese and Grimaldi

Edoardo Grimaldi, PMP, PMI-SIC Vice President and chapter liaison to PMIEF, opened the seminar with an introduction to PMI and PMIEF.  Pasquino then discussed two well-known reconstruction projects -- the city of L'Aquila's Palazzo Camponeschi and law courts building -- after the 2009 earthquake in the country's Abruzzi region.  Morgese also explained salient elements of the PMMPDR and sustainability management as a long-term plan to support disaster victims.

Thanks to Morgese's volunteerism and ingenuity, those in attendance now understand PMIEF's unique contribution to disaster management as well as the global reach and impact of its work.  Furthermore, she has created a meaningful connection between PMI-SIC, the University of Naples Federico II and key stakeholders that will undoubtedly prove invaluable over time.

PMIEF Disaster Management Task Team

The work continues!

PMIEF continues to strategize how best to leverage project management to support disaster management.  With the help of its Disaster Management Task Team, a committee comprised of PMI volunteers with subject matter expertise, PMIEF is examining challenges encountered in the field and strategizing their potential solutions as a key aspect of its philanthropic initiatives.  This included a July 2013 disaster management workshop for practitioners and leaders in the field to create and to exchange knowledge.  PMIEF and its Task Team continue to partner and are currently developing plans for an appropriate follow-up to the
PMMPDR.
