PM for Social Good®

Greetings!

Partnering with a nonprofit organization is a great way to leverage project management to spur positive change in your community and in the lives of children.

In this month's newsletter, you'll read about PMIEF's support of Kubunina, an initiative in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that creates educational and entrepreneurial
opportunities for young people.  The PMI Northern Italy Chapter is deeply committed to this program and provides ongoing assistance to ensure its success.

In addition, you'll learn how nonprofit employees and teachers can apply for project management training scholarships.  We invite you to share this information with these individuals so they, too, can acquire project management knowledge and skills.

Sincerely,

Your friends at PMIEF

In 2011, the PMI-Northern Italy Chapter (PMI-NIC) partnered with the Veterinary Association for Cooperation with Developing Countries (AVEC-PVS), an Italian nonprofit, to support the organization's rural development efforts in the war-torn Democratic Republic of the Congo.  The collaboration resulted in Kubunina, an initiative that aims to improve conditions in one of the poorest countries in the world by helping youth, teachers, parents and communities understand how to strategically apply project management knowledge to launch income-generating activities.

PMIEF awarded a US$ 100,000 grant to AVEC-PVS in 2012 for this work. Swahili for "let's plan together," Kubunina uses the PMI-NIC's Projects from the Future toolkit to teach project management through hands-on training.  Doing so will better prepare learners to successfully enter the world of work.
Kubunina connects students and teachers in the Congo and Italy.

The program leverages project management to launch and to sustain gardening, canning and beekeeping business ventures that generate revenues for teachers' salaries and textbooks as well as provide free meals of fruits, vegetables, honey and juices for students.  In addition, Kubunina delivers project management training to Congolese and Italian students and their teachers through a twinning component. Twenty-two pairs of classrooms in both countries use Projects from the Future to understand project management in seven easy steps while they also participate in cultural exchange.

Several European PMI communities have joined PMI-NIC to support Kubunina. For instance, the PMI France-Sud Chapter is collecting books for schools in Congo while proceeds from the PMI Norway Chapter's talent show for local school children benefited the initiative.
