Participants plan projects as part of the teacher training pilot
|
This month, 20 teachers participated in a pilot professional development seminar for educators at the College of Education at West Chester University, PA USA.
The training program, which is being developed by The Institute for Educational Excellence and Entrepreneurship (3E Institute), consists of two stages. First, the teachers are presented content in a day-long seminar about about how to implement project-based learning in the classroom and incorporate project management.
The course instructor, Simon Hauger, a teacher in nearby Philadelphia, remarks, "Projects are by far the best vehicle for engagement and for teaching higher order skills."
The second half of the training is designed to give teachers a chance apply what they've learned by working in small groups to identify and plan a project. Simon remarks, "It's more about the process than the content, but I believe they will come up with some really exciting project ideas for the classroom."
At the conclusion of the training, educators will have a few weeks to turn in project plans. They can then apply for seed money from 3E Institute--thanks to the PMIEF grant--to cover any financial needs required for implementation. In addition, they will also have at their disposal a small team of advisers--volunteers from the local PMI chapter--to help implement their projects.
