Hello and welcome!

What's Happening at the GWDC

We can't believe that September is here already! Where did the summer go? We had a great time with our summer visitors and summer staff and we're sad to see them leave. However, don't think this means there won't be plenty going on at the Center for the fall season! Our new hours are 8:30AM - 7:00PM through September 27th.

Coming up this Saturday, we will have the US Forest Service Bear Aware Trailer from 10AM - 4PM, with Bear Aware Technician Katrina Talbot, a former GWDC animal keeper. The trailer will be set up in front of the Center's entrance and it is FREE to the public. The programs will include bear safety and bear pepper spray demonstrations, as well as an opportunity to fire a canister of pepper spray at a "charging bear" simulator! If you've ever wondered if you are quick enough to spray a charging grizzly bear, this is an opportunity not to be missed. We hope you can stop by and join us!

Also this Saturday, we will be celebrating International Vulture Awareness Day in honor of one of our newest residents, Lewis the turkey vulture. International Vulture Awareness Day is celebrated on the first Saturday in September, and its purpose is to highlight and bring awareness to conservation issues for vultures around the world. Stop by for kids' activities or a vulture quiz.

Remember if you have any questions, or just want to know more about any aspect of the Center, you can always give us a call at 406.646.7001, reply to this newsletter, or email

info@grizzlydiscoveryctr.comWe will try to keep you informed and up to date in as many ways as we can. Your involvement and interest in what we do keeps us doing it! We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thanks again for tuning in.

Animal Updates

As we mentioned above, the Center's aviaries have some new residents! Lewis the turkey vulture came to us from Southern Utah. Lewis has a wing injury and will never be able to fly.  Whether he is perched up on top of a dead tree in his aviary, or strutting around his habitat with purpose, Lewis has been enchanting visitors and raising awareness for these amazing birds since his arrival.

Also new to the aviaries is Keek, a rough-legged hawk from the Helena, Montana area. Keek also has a wing injury that prevents her release into the wild. As the weather turns colder here in West Yellowstone, Keek does not seem to mind. Rough-legged hawks spend their summers up on the Arctic tundra and their winters in many northern states, including Montana, so Keek is well-adapted to handle the snow that will inevitably fly!

The bears are getting ready for the winter too. Even though the bears at the Center do not hibernate, they still go through a period of hyperphagia. During hyperphagia our bears want to eat, eat, and eat! A wild bear might eat up to 20,000 calories per day when it is storing fat for hibernation. The bears at the Center don't eat that much, but when we see Spirit walking the habitat in a grid pattern to make sure she hasn't missed any morsels of food we know hyperphagia has started!

The wolves have been howling up a storm as we move into the fall season. It seems like we hear them communicating in this way every morning and most evenings. Wild wolves howl for social bonding, to communicate with pack members that have been separated, to defend their territory, and to rally before the hunt, among other things. So why are the wolves at the GWDC howling? We don't always know, but it's fun to guess!

Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on the reason we're all here - the animals! Every issue of our email newsletter will have updates on the animals, and we will still be sending quarterly newsletters through the mail. We hope you'll follow our progress keep an eye on the animals, and please come visit us soon.

Knowledge Is a Powerful Tool

We have a special program planned for next Tuesday, September 9th, at 11:00AM in the theater. We are thrilled to announce that Heather and Derek Reich will be here with their Karelian Bear Dogs, along with beautifully filmed footage of their dogs in action. It should be one of the most exciting hours we've hosted in a long time! Please join us.

The naturalist staff has been busy this summer and we've recently said goodbye to two fantastic educators, Emily and Madeline. We wish them the best in all their future endeavors.

Our new iPad activities have been popular with our visitors this summer. Technology allows you to learn about bears from all over the world, test your skills with black bear and grizzly bear identification, and see if you know what to do to avoid a bear encounter when hiking in Yellowstone. More updates to our museum exhibits are coming this winter, so be sure to stop by and see what's new!

Two new programs, "Mythological Creatures of Montana" and "Let's Play" are educating our visitors this fall. "Mythological Creatures" touches on potential scientific reasoning behind mysterious animal sightings, while "Let's Play" is all about how animals use play behavior to communicate. Exploring the mysteries of nature and of animal behavior is fascinating and we love having the opportunity to share it with you!

As our summer season winds down, the education staff starts to look forward to school programs and planning for the future. Speaking of the future, the Center's naturalists and raptors will be attending the 2014 Bridger Raptor Festival in Bozeman, MT October 4th and 5th. Be sure to come and see us there for one of our live raptor talks. It is one of our favorite events of the year.

Don't forget about the Bear Aware Trailer this Saturday!

If you're interested in visiting the GWDC with your family or with your students, or if you'd like to sponsor a Teaching Trunk or outreach program, let us know. One of the Center's naturalists can visit your school for special assemblies, programs or activities. As you know, some of our birds-of-prey can travel for such programs as can our large collection of wolf and bear artifacts. We are currently adding materials to our Teaching Trunks, and adding programs to our roster. We will customize the program or the Teaching Trunk for your group and areas of special interest.

Eye Candy
Photographs and Artwork from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center

We are honored to have many artists and photographers visit and support the GWDC. Their vision and talents inspire and enliven our work here, so we thought it would be nice to feature some of their work in every issue of our newsletter. If you'd like to see your artwork here, send us an image! Paintings, sculptures, and mixed media are welcome too. Thanks to Karl Girardi, Christopher Balmer, and Gretchen Heine for this week's photos.

This month we have some video eye candy for you as well! You can see a terrific sample of Nakiska the Karelian Bear Dog in action here, watch a news video on the importance of our new Easy Street exhibit here, and check out the wolves howling on Facebook here. We also hosted a British film crew on August 21st, which went very well.  Look for a segment featuring the GWDC to air on the Smithsonian Channel in late 2014 or early 2015. We'll keep you posted here!

We hope you enjoy this issue, learn a little something, and feel like you are here with us for just a few minutes. It's a pretty special place to be. Have a great month and enjoy all September has to offer, and we'll look forward to seeing you soon.

Thanks again for keeping up with us and for all you do.

Sincerely,
Karl Girardi 2
