Hello and welcome!

Thanks for dropping in to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, a not-for-profit, AZA-accredited wildlife park and educational facility with a diverse crew of staff and volunteers. We're glad you're here with us, and we hope to see you in person soon. And by the way, Happy 4th!!

As usual, there's a lot going on in this issue. Enjoy the photos and the news. Get to know our amazing cast of characters, and share us with your friends. Please come visit us right here in West Yellowstone, relax and watch the animals, and participate in one of our interactive programs and displays. Until then we wish you all the best. We hope we can bring a little discovery and excitement your way. See you soon!

What's Happening at the GWDC

Have you missed us? We've missed you. In case you were worried your email address got lost or dropped from the list, we've simply gone to a bi-monthly email newsletter. We have so much to tell you about though we may just surprise you this summer with an extra issue or two. Since our last e-mail, lots has been happening here at the Center! In fact, the last time we talked, the ground was still covered in snow! Summer is now in full swing here, with lots of new visitors to meet every day. We have new animals, new exhibits, and lots of new faces on our staff. And of course, everyone's familiar favorites are doing well too. Read on to learn more!

Before we get too far, we want to wish you a happy, safe, and festive 4th of July. We hope you are able to spend it in a special way, and that this finds you and your summer in full swing too. We'll be caring for the animals, visiting with guests, catching the West Yellowstone 4th of July parade, and then staying up for the big fireworks show at the edge of town. Maybe you can join us!

If you do happen to be in town this weekend, be sure to swing by the Center at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday morning, July 5th. Bozeman area artist and author Ted Rechlin will be here signing copies of his nature comic books, "Silvertip: A Year in the Life of a Yellowstone Grizzly," and "Epsilon: A Yellowstone Wolf Story". The Center will also be permanently hosting his new art exhibit, "Sixty-Five Million Years of Yellowstone" which will be on display near our new "Living with Bears on Easy Street" area.

Remember if you have any questions, or just want to know more about any aspect of the Center, you can always give us a call at 406.646.7001, reply to this newsletter, or email
info@grizzlydiscoveryctr.com. We will try to keep you informed and up to date in as many ways as we can. Your involvement and interest in what we do keeps us doing it! We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thanks again for tuning in.

Animal Updates

We have two exciting bits of animal news here at the Center since we talked last! If you come to the Center this summer, you will likely see new faces in the aviary. In the largest exhibit you will see the two bald eagles, Josh and Zack. They seem happy in their new, larger enclosure and can often be seen bathing in their pool! New to the aviary are Targhee and Jago, a great-horned owl and peregrine falcon. Targhee has been demonstrating his excellent camouflage by spending his time high up in the lodgepole pines in his habitat. As Jago moves from perch to perch, you will see his aerodynamic physique in action and imagine just how fast peregrine falcons can fly (over 200 mph!) in the wild.

We have also begun switching our wolf packs between the three habitats we have at the Center. This gives each wolf pack an opportunity to periodically explore a new territory, keeping both their brains and bodies active and alert. Recently, Summit and Granite moved to an enclosure with a big fish pond. It was Summit's first time in this enclosure and he has been a joy to watch as he bellyflops off the waterfall and into the water! We've never seen one of our wolves do this before, which just goes to show that every day is a new day here at the Center!

Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on the reason we're all here - the animals! Every issue of our email newsletter will have updates on the animals, and we will still be sending quarterly newsletters through the mail. We hope you'll stay tuned and please come visit us soon.

 Education
Knowledge Is a Powerful Tool

Our Education Department is busy this summer with new programs and exhibits!

The Keeper Kids program, where kids ages 5-12 can hide food for the bears in the bear habitat, has long been one of our most popular programs. But what do you do if you are 13-17 years old and still want hands-on experience with animal care? Join the brand new Keeper Crew program! Keeper Crew is a program that runs on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings. The program gives participants a behind-the-scenes look at how our animal keepers prepare food and make enrichment for our animals. Then the Keeper Crew gets to create some enrichment of their own! This program has so far been successful and well received by the teenagers who have participated.

Our "Living with Bears on Easy Street" exhibit is opening soon! If you have the opportunity and are nearby, come on over to see it. If not, come back and visit us later this summer and check out the pictures on Facebook. The goal of this new exhibit is to help visitors who live in bear country learn how to keep their homes, gardens, beehives, chicken coops, and other attractants safe and out of reach for hungry black and grizzly bears. If you take a walk down "Easy Street" here at the Center, you will learn just how many hidden and unexpected attractants are in a typical residential neighborhood. It may surprise you! Later in the summer, there will be demonstrations on how to protect chicken coops and gardens with electric wire, the best way to keep bears out!

If you're interested in visiting the GWDC with your family or with your students, or if you'd like to sponsor a Teaching Trunk or outreach program, let us know. One of the Center's naturalists can visit your school for special assemblies, programs or activities. As you know, some of our birds-of-prey can travel for such programs as can our large collection of wolf and bear artifacts. We are currently adding materials to our Teaching Trunks, and adding programs to our roster. We will customize the program or the Teaching Trunk for your group and areas of special interest.

New and Exciting Opportunities to Support the GWDC

We have two new raffles to share with you this summer! If you're tempted to buy multiple tickets for both items, please don't resist the urge.

The first summer raffle item is this amazing photo of a family of river otters, titled "The Happy Family." Deby Dixon donated this framed picture she took in Yellowstone National Park. Being able to capture five wild river otters in one photo is quite an amazing feat! To view more of Deby's stunning photography, please visit her page on Facebook @ Running Wolf Nature Photography by Deby Dixon.

The second summer raffle item was donated by Christopher Balmer, owner of Perfect Light Camera in Idaho Falls. This gorgeous custom framed 28X38 aluminum print titled "God's Palette" is a $699.00 value. Christopher took this dramatic image 2000 feet above the Grand Prismatic spring in Yellowstone National Park from a powered parachute in 2013. You can view more of Christopher's beautiful photography at www.balmerphoto.com or on Facebook @ Perfect Light Camera.
