Hello and welcome!

Thanks for dropping in to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, a not-for-profit, AZA-accredited wildlife park and educational facility, with a diverse crew of staff and volunteers. We're glad you're here with us, and we hope to see you in person soon.

As usual, there's a lot going on in this issue. Enjoy the photos and the news. Get to know our amazing cast of characters, and share us with your friends. Please come visit us right here in West Yellowstone, relax and watch the animals, and participate in one of our interactive programs and displays. Until then we wish you all the best. We hope we can bring a little discovery and excitement your way. See you soon!

What's Happening at the GWDC

Happy December to you! Before we launch into stories of arctic temperatures and hot new projects, we have a couple of corrections to make. Our apologies and sheepish grins to Bill Whetstone, whose photo was in this first slot last issue, and to all of you who are interested in the Christmas Stocking Raffle. The raffle will run through the end of the year, not through mid-December. Read more about it here or in the Gift Shop section below. Thanks for "bearing" with us. And with our puns.

Christmas for the Critters has also been extended this year. We usually start offering discounted admission in exchange for treats for the animals around the middle of the month, but this year we're running this special all the way through December. We've already had our first donations! You can read more about this great opportunity in the Development section below, or click the Christmas raffle link above. Thanks for sharing this holiday season with the animals at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center.

If you're heading to our area in December, please join us for the Christmas Bird Count on Sunday, December 15th. This annual tradition is almost here again. The 114-year-old survey is the longest running Citizen Science survey in the world. In conjunction with the Sacajawea Audubon Society in Bozeman, the GWDC sponsors this annual event every December as an opportunity for beginning and expert birders to get together and enjoy a day of birding in the West Yellowstone/Hebgen Lake area! Meet at the Center at 8:30 a.m., and participate by car, snowmobile, skis or snowshoes. If you don't want to be out in the cold, you can still participate by letting us know the number and species of birds at your bird feeder.

Remember if you have any questions, or just want to know more about any aspect of the Center, you can always give us a call at 406.646.7001, reply to this newsletter, or email
info@grizzlydiscoveryctr.com. We will try to keep you informed and up to date in as many ways as we can. Your involvement and interest in what we do keeps us doing it! We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thanks again for tuning in.

Animal Updates

Without spending TOO much time on the fact that it was 5 degrees in the sun yesterday afternoon, we can simply say that the bald eagles, our last birds to come off exhibit, were brought in to their indoor mews with perfect timing. We won't even mention the low temperature last night. We look forward to returning birds to aviaries, with new space and possibly new birds on exhibit, next spring.

As you know, Leopold and Summit were introduced several weeks ago and have been doing very well together. Since these two were the Omegas in their former packs, their new pack has been named in honor of Granite, the very first Omega Male wolf to reside at the Center. Granite was the Omega Male of the Gallatin Pack, and was much loved by staff and visitors alike. He passed away in May of 2010 at 15 years of age. In his honor, Leopold and Summit have been named the Granite Pack.

A few weeks ago we got an email asking if we would give a glimpse of the animals' lives backstage so to speak. What happens when they're not on the habitat where everyone can see? It's a great question, and what better place than here to answer it? The bears, as you know, each have a den in the building behind the habitat. While the bears are out on the habitat, the keepers clean their dens and leave food and toys for them. Once the bears come back in and explore what's been left for them, they settle in to eat and play. Sow 101 is especially thorough, sifting through her straw one piece at a time with her claws, looking for any and all raisins, nuts and seeds. Her careful search can take most of the night! If you're looking for a special treat for her or any of the bears, or a Christmas for the Critters offering, SEEDS (pumpkin and sunflower) would make 101's day. And if you're looking for more behind the scenes stories and information, consider adopting your favorite animal or purchasing a membership or Behind the Scenes Tour.

Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on the reason we're all here - the animals! Remember to check out our webcams when you're wondering what's going on around at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center or wanting to stay connected until your next visit. Every issue of our email newsletter will have updates on our animals, and we will still be sending quarterly newsletters through the mail. Read more about these Howls & Growls newsletters below, and please come visit us soon.

Education
Knowledge Is a Powerful Tool

The Education department is again hosting National Park Ranger Talks, which will debut December 21st and run through March 9th of next year. Join a Yellowstone Park Ranger for a fascinating series highlighting the natural, cultural and scenic wonders of Yellowstone Park. Weekly programs will be held Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 here at the Center. The program is free but there is a fee if you choose to visit the rest of the Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center.

Last week we saw many visitors at special Thanksgiving Week programs. This "Wild Winter" series featured all sorts of topics, including a session on dissecting owl pellets with a guest appearance by Acadia. West Yellowstone hosted around 4000 guests for the annual ski festival last week, and we welcomed many of them here at the Center. Thanks to all who attended!

We have school and university groups visiting and a couple of interesting film projects on the calendar, as well as the West Yellowstone After School program to enjoy as winter takes hold. Keep an eye out here for more information about upcoming classes and workshops.

If you're interested in visiting the GWDC with your family or with your students, or if you'd like to sponsor a Teaching Trunk or outreach program, let us know. One of the Center's naturalists can visit your school for special assemblies, programs or activities. As you know, some of our birds-of-prey can travel for such programs as can our large collection of wolf and bear artifacts. We are currently adding materials to our Teaching Trunks (Thanks Kelly!), and adding programs to our roster. We will customize the program or the Teaching Trunk for your group and areas of special interest.

New and Exciting Opportunities to Support the GWDC

Hope your Thanksgiving was happy, your time spent with loved ones joyful, and that the ensuing days of shopping, small business-supporting, cyber-bargain-hunting, and getting back into the swing of things after the holiday were peaceful and productive for you. If you're headed our direction this month, remember to bring anything from the above list with you for the animals here at the Center and you will be supporting us and enjoying a bargain at the same time. Thanks for supporting Christmas for the Critters year after year.

Photographs and Artwork from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center

We are honored to have many artists and photographers visit and support the GWDC. Their vision and talents inspire and enliven our work here, so we thought it would be nice to feature some of their work in every issue of our newsletter. If you'd like to see your artwork here, send us an image! Paintings, sculptures, and mixed media are welcome too.

Our thanks to DG House, Michael Platenga, Anton Morrison and Gretchen Heine for this week's photographs.

We hope you enjoy this issue, learn a little something, and feel like you are here with us for just a few minutes. It's a pretty special place to be. Have a great couple of weeks and a fantastic winter, and we'll look forward to seeing you soon.

Thanks again for keeping up with us and for all you do.

Sincerely,
Four Bears
