Hello and welcome!

Thanks for dropping in to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, a not-for-profit, AZA-accredited wildlife park and educational facility, with a diverse crew of staff and volunteers. We're glad you're here with us, and we hope to see you in person soon.

As usual, there's a lot going on in this issue. Enjoy the photos and the news. Get to know our amazing cast of characters, and share us with your friends. Please come visit us right here in West Yellowstone, relax and watch the animals, and participate in one of our interactive programs and displays. Until then we wish you all the best. We hope we can bring a little discovery and excitement your way. See you soon!

What's Happening at the GWDC

Snow. That's what's happening at the GWDC. Snow and more snow according to the forecast. Doesn't seem to be bothering anyone, and to be honest, it's a great backdrop for viewing and photographing the animals. It's also great news for next week's West Yellowstone Ski Festival. Welcome skiers, coaches, company reps and families! We hope to see many of you here at the Center during Thanksgiving week. And we wish ALL of you a happy, cozy, and grateful Thanksgiving. It's hard to believe it's already time to gather around the table again and recite the things we're thankful for, and we know it sounds corny, but we're thankful for YOU.

Taking a page from the National Parks, we opened our doors on November 9th for a Fee-Free Day! Our Free Day was a tremendous success and a lot of fun. Over 350 people, mostly from West Yellowstone and nearby communities, attended and it was a blast to see so many families and children enjoying the animals and the exhibits. We hope to continue this tradition in the future as a way of thanking and welcoming the people around us, and giving a little something back to our community.

If you're heading to our area in December, please join us for the Christmas Bird Count on Sunday, December 15th. This annual tradition is almost here again. The 114-year-old survey is the longest running Citizen Science survey in the world. In conjunction with the Sacajawea Audubon Society in Bozeman, the GWDC sponsors this annual event every December as an opportunity for beginning and expert birders to get together and enjoy a day of birding in the West Yellowstone/Hebgen Lake area! Meet at the Center at 8:30 a.m., and participate by car, snowmobile, skis or snowshoes. If you don't want to be out in the cold, you can still participate by letting us know the number and species of birds at your bird feeder.

Remember if you have any questions, or just want to know more about any aspect of the Center, you can always give us a call at 406.646.7001, reply to this newsletter, or email
info@grizzlydiscoveryctr.com. We will try to keep you informed and up to date in as many ways as we can. Your involvement and interest in what we do keeps us doing it! We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thanks again for tuning in.

Animal Updates

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow! The bears have been rolling, playing, and poking their noses through the white stuff this week, seeming to enjoy the newly covered habitat. We want to thank all of you for sharing in our loss of Illie.

We are working on the final touches in the High Country habitat with high hopes of bringing Leopold and Summit into the new enclosure before the end of the year. The wolves are still getting enrichment daily; we expect to see that change to less frequent feedings of elk rib cages and wild game offerings in the next few weeks.

The birds-of-prey are mostly tucked in for the winter, with bald eagles Josh and Zack still experiencing the fresh air of the outdoor aviary for another week or two, as long as the weather holds. Whether winter weather in November makes you hide your head under the covers or pull out your snowsuit in glee, remember that bald eagles do not mind the cold. In fact the only reason wild eagles migrate in winter is because food sources change. As rivers in the north begin to freeze, eagles move to find available food, not warmth.

Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on the reason we're all here - the animals! Remember to check out our webcams when you're wondering what's going on around at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center or wanting to stay connected until your next visit. Every issue of our email newsletter will have updates on our animals, and we will still be sending quarterly newsletters through the mail. Read more about these Howls & Growls newsletters below, and please come visit us soon.

Education
Knowledge Is a Powerful Tool

If you haven't visited the GWDC lately, you may have forgotten how many educational opportunities are waiting for you here. Naturalists are always available to talk with you, answer questions, and interpret the behaviors of the animals. In addition, a variety of exhibits, videos, and interactive displays provide a wealth of information. As you can see, even the model den in the viewing area is full of intrigue and fun.

AJ and Trent recently returned from the National Association of Interpreters Conference, where they presented a session in addition to attending a long list of interesting workshops. Their training session at the conference went very well. They learned a lot and were able to work with some amazing people! What does this mean for you? New programs, new ways of presenting information, and new resources!

We have school and university groups visiting and a couple of interesting film projects on the calendar, as well as the West Yellowstone After School program to enjoy as the season changes from fall to winter. If you're interested in visiting the GWDC with your family or with your students, or if you'd like to sponsor a Teaching Trunk or outreach program, let us know. One of the Center's naturalists can visit your school for special assemblies, programs or activities. As you know, some of our birds-of-prey can travel for such programs as can our large collection of wolf and bear artifacts. We will customize the program or the Teaching Trunk for your group and areas of special interest.

New and Exciting Opportunities to Support the GWDC

It's time to switch out our raffles! We have officially marked the change of seasons with a change of raffle prizes. First, congratulations to our summer raffle winners! Ellen from Texas won Wendy Bishop's beautiful quilt, and David from California won Ken Takata's framed photograph of the South Fork of the Madison River. Thank you to every single person who bought a ticket, admired these pieces, or spread the word about the raffles. Together you helped us raise over $4500 for the animals and the Center!

Our new winter raffle is this beautifully framed graphite pencil drawing by Utah artist Doug Monson. You can see his other western and wildlife scenes at MonsonArt.com, and on display in Jackson Hole, WY. We are deeply grateful for this generous gift, and we look forward to sharing it with the winner of the raffle next spring. The raffle will end on April 30, 2014, and of course you do not have to be here to win. Tickets are $10.00 each, and are available online, over the phone (800.257.2570), in the Naturalist Cabin and in the Gift Shop. Take a chance (or several) on this original work of art! Thank you Doug!

In other art news, we have started posting the winners of our 2nd Annual Autumn Discovery Photography Contest on Facebook! You'll be seeing their photos here in the email news, and in upcoming Howls & Growls newsletters over the coming months, but if you just can't wait to see who won and who our runners-up are, check it out here! To everyone who has participated on Facebook so far, a huge thank you for voting on our Honorable Mention winners!

Finally, 'tis the season to begin thinking about Christmas for the Critters. For a few weeks every year we collect all sorts of goodies for the bears and wolves in the Gift Shop in exchange for a reduced Admission price. Start saving your seeds, nuts, and other natural treats now.

Your support makes a world of difference to the animals here at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. We hope to hear from you and see you soon.

Photographs and Artwork from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center

We are honored to have many artists and photographers visit and support the GWDC. Their vision and talents inspire and enliven our work here, so we thought it would be nice to feature some of their work in every issue of our newsletter. Our thanks to Len Tillim, Kim Diloreto, Liz and Mark Hadfield, and Shanna Arneson for this week's photographs.

We hope you enjoy this issue, learn a little something, and feel like you are here with us for just a few minutes. It's a pretty special place to be. Have a great couple of weeks and a fantastic autumn, and we'll look forward to seeing you soon.

Thanks again for keeping up with us and for all you do.
