High Country Habitat
|
Around The Center
What's Happening at the GWDC
As you can see from this picture, we're not exactly making hay while the sun shines, but we are making huge piles of dirt, lots of noise, and an impressive expansion in the High Country Habitat during this week of great weather. Thanks to a tremendous response to our Summer Appeal, the generosity of some very special friends of Leopold's, and a busy team of fence and facility guys, we should see remarkable improvements to the High Country habitat by the end of next week.
We are also working on fencing part of the new aviary while the weather cooperates and we have the equipment and expertise right here on site. The bear diet kitchen is ALMOST finished, along with the vehicle maintenance/garage area. Not that we're asking for an early winter, but we are feeling prepared. Easy to say that when the sun is shining and the high temperatures are in the 50s all week.
If you still have a visit planned, we urge you to come with your camera before the end of this month! Our 2nd Annual Autumn Discovery Photography Contest has a little more than one week left, and we're looking for a few more entries. For information about submitting your photos, just reply to this email or call the Center and ask for Jen.
Remember if you have any questions, or just want to know more about any aspect of the Center, you can always give us a call at 406.646.7001, reply to this newsletter, or email
info@grizzlydiscoveryctr.com. We will try to keep you informed and up to date in as many ways as we can. Your involvement and interest in what we do keeps us doing it! We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thanks again for tuning in.

Bears, Wolves, and Birds
(Oh My!)
Animal Updates
With lows in the teens lately, cold weather means adjusting bird diets and bird exhibits. We are constantly evaluating the health and well-being of the birds, and making changes accordingly. Tegan has been getting slightly larger portions lately. You'll also notice when you visit that we are starting to take birds off exhibit for the winter. The bears are still in hyperphagia, and continue to slowly gain weight for the winter. They seem especially photogenic in the fall, all filled out with thick glossy coats and the low-tilted autumn light... this time of year it's easy to see how healthy and robust the bears are. Roosevelt and Grant have reached another milestone. These days they are coming in and going out to the habitat past all the bigger bears, walking comfortably through the den area in a relaxed and well-adapted manner. The last of all of the trees are going in to the habitats now, and the last of the fish have been utilized. Elk bones are currently a big favorite with the wolves. As we move into winter, enrichment will take different forms.
Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on the reason we're all here - the animals! Remember to check out our webcams when you're wondering what's going on around at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center or wanting to stay connected until your next visit. Every issue of our email newsletter will have updates on our animals, and we will still be sending quarterly newsletters through the mail. Read more about these Howls & Growls newsletters below, and please come visit us soon.

Education
Knowledge Is a Powerful Tool
With Wolf Awareness Week behind us and the latest Certified Interpretive Guide training course under our belts, the Education team has moved on to researching and writing several interesting articles for our own Howls & Growls newsletter and for the National Association of Interpreters magazine. If you want to learn more about how hibernation has informed several scientific studies for instance, or how the reintroduction of wolves has led to greater berry crops for grizzly bears, stay tuned to our quarterly newsletter. The NAI article may be a little harder to get your hands on, but with an engaging article about how to interpret controversial and potentially emotional issues for visitors (such as wolf reintroduction), you may want to seek it out.
Another way our naturalists are trying to engage and inform folks is with technology. We told you earlier this summer about our new cellphone tour around the Center. This fall brings iPads to our museum and to the viewing areas! We will have a number of activities that visitors can pursue on the tablet computers inside, and the naturalist covering the habitats will carry one for educational purposes outside.
We have school and university groups visiting and a couple of interesting film projects on the calendar, as well as the West Yellowstone After School program to look forward to as the season changes. If you're interested in visiting the GWDC with your family or with your students, or if you'd like to sponsor a Teaching Trunk or outreach program, let us know. One of the Center's naturalists can visit your school for special assemblies, programs or activities. As you know, some of our birds-of-prey can travel for such programs as can our large collection of wolf and bear artifacts. We will customize the program or the Teaching Trunk for your group and areas of special interest.

New and Exciting Opportunities to Support the GWDC
Along with fence guys in the aviaries and pumpkins in the habitats, October brings the end of our summer raffles! You have seven days left to purchase raffle tickets for the beautiful handmade quilt and the stunning matted and framed photograph we've featured throughout the summer. Drawings will be held first thing in the morning on November 1st, so you have until midnight on Halloween to purchase tickets online. You do not need to be present to win. For only $10 per ticket you've can buy yourself the chance(s) to win either or both of these gorgeous pieces. If you'd like to buy raffle tickets online, click here and type "quilt raffle" or "photo raffle" (or both) in the Project line. Our deepest thanks go to Wendy Bishop and Ken Takata for donating their time and talents to support the Center.

Eye Candy
Photographs and Artwork from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center
We are honored to have many artists and photographers visit and support the GWDC. Their vision and talents inspire and enliven our work here, so we thought it would be nice to feature some of their work in every issue of our newsletter. If you'd like to see your artwork here, send us an image! Paintings, sculptures, and mixed media are welcome too.
Our thanks to Nancy Wolfe, Dean Foy, and Gretchen Heine for this week's photographs.
