Hello and welcome!
Thanks for dropping in to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, a not-for-profit, AZA-accredited wildlife park and educational facility, with a diverse crew of staff and volunteers. We're glad you're here with us, and we hope to see you in person soon.
As usual, there's a lot going on in this issue. Enjoy the photos and the news. Get to know our amazing cast of characters, and share us with your friends. Please come visit us right here in West Yellowstone, relax and watch the animals, and participate in one of our interactive programs and displays. Until then we wish you all the best. We hope we can bring a little discovery and excitement your way. See you soon!

Around The Center
What's Happening at the GWDC
Fall Equinox (which quietly came and went this past weekend, along with a GORGEOUS Harvest Moon a few nights before) brings with it aspens changing from green to gold, pumpkins, and snow, not necessarily in that order. The forecast is calling for snow flurries (not the first we've seen this season!) today and tomorrow, which is a full week before our first load of pumpkins will arrive. September can be iffy weather-wise, but seeing Mother Nature at her finest is a given this month. If you haven't visited the Center or Yellowstone in the fall, don't waste another year. Come see us soon. We want to welcome the Federation of Fly Fishers to West Yellowstone this week! Our first sightings were Monday, as they gathered on the front lawn of the Union Pacific Dining Hall to work on their casting. The rest of the week is chock full of workshops, exhibits, programs, fishing of course, and their annual fundraising auction. We hope participants will carve out a few minutes from their busy schedules to stop by and see the animals here at the GWDC. As outdoors-men and -women whose organization is founded on conservation and education, we feel we have a lot in common with and a lot to offer them.
Thanks to many of you who have responded to our Summer Appeal, we now have plans to expand the High Country Wolf habitat. We are well on our way to making improvements to the habitat so the wolves can remain in close proximity to each other while experiencing a safe and stimulating environment.
Remember if you have any questions, or just want to know more about any aspect of the Center, you can always give us a call at 406.646.7001, reply to this newsletter, or email
info@grizzlydiscoveryctr.com. We will try to keep you informed and up to date in as many ways as we can. Your involvement and interest in what we do keeps us doing it! We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thanks again for tuning in.

Bears, Wolves, and Birds
(Oh My!)
Animal Updates
With hyperphagia in full tilt right now, you may just see the bears conserving energy on the habitat after they've hunted and foraged for food. Their bodies signal that now is the time to take in as many calories as possible while expending as few as they can. Only Nakina makes lounging look this comfortable however. The bears typically gain between 50 and 150 pounds in the fall, even though they do not hibernate. With Forest Service permits in hand, the animal keepers will make their last tree run between now and the end of October. These trees will be used in the bear habitat, then moved into the wolf habitats. A few will also be used in the bird mews before eventually being mulched for landscaping around the Center. Our 5th and final fish delivery arrived two weeks ago now. The wolves, bears, and birds were all able to partake. With the changing season, we are now able to switch gears and start receiving game meat. Big bones go to the bears, scraps go to the eagles, and everything else will be given to the wolf packs. Construction on a new aviary is underway. In the spring you will notice the new space and a change in the birds on exhibit. In the meantime, most of the birds-of-prey will remain outside until the weather forces us to move them in. When exactly? Your guess is as good as ours. We hope they can stay outside through Thanksgiving, but we'll keep you in the know right here.
Stay tuned and we'll keep you posted on the reason we're all here - the animals! Remember to check out our webcams when you're wondering what's going on around at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center or wanting to stay connected until your next visit. Every issue of our email newsletter will have updates on our animals, and we will still be sending quarterly newsletters through the mail. Read more about these Howls & Growls newsletters below, and please come visit us soon.

Education
Knowledge Is a Powerful Tool
The 11th Annual Fall Photo Festival, co-sponsored by Yellowstone National Park and the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, took place last night. What an incredible gathering of amateur and professional photographers. This event gives "slide show" a whole new meaning. Upcoming on our calendar is the Bridger Raptor Festival, which you won't want to miss October 5th and 6th in Bozeman. We'll be there with birds on. Sorry. Couldn't resist. The GWDC, in partnership with the National Association for Interpretation (NAI), is offering a professional certification course for individuals who will be delivering interpretive programs at interpretive sites. The Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) program is designed for anyone who delivers interpretive programs to the public. It combines both the theoretical foundations of the profession with practical skills in delivering quality interpretive programming to visitors. The 32-hour course will take place Oct. 17-Oct. 20 at the West Yellowstone Visitor Information Center. Advance registration for the course is required. Please contact Trent or AJ at education@grizzlydiscoveryctr.com or call 406-646-7001 for more information. You can also check out a full course description and find out more information on NAI and the CIG program on the web. The Education crew has been tracking visitor contacts - close to 1,400 last week, which for mid-September seems like a hefty number. The after school program also kicked off last week with an afternoon of making slime and talking about chemical reactions. Also news-worthy? Our brand-spanking-new Trophic Cascade Program, held in the Naturalist Cabin to make use of the amazing graphic and River Otter exhibit model is a must-see. Finally, if you've been keeping up with our Bear Safe Community Project, we have given out 30 bear safe community checklists so far! Thanks to everyone who has participated (we have more if you haven't). If you're interested in visiting the GWDC with your family or with your students, or if you'd like to sponsor a Teaching Trunk or outreach program, let us know. One of the Center's naturalists can visit your school for special assemblies, programs or activities. As you know, some of our birds-of-prey can travel for such programs as can our large collection of wolf and bear artifacts. We will customize the program or the Teaching Trunk for your group and areas of special interest.

New and Exciting Opportunities to Support the GWDC
Does fall ever make you a little nostalgic? A little homesick for you-don't-quite-know-what? We think it's a perfect time to look back over almost 15 years as a nonprofit organization, an anniversary we will celebrate next year, and start planning the festivities. We will unveil our special events and commemorations soon, so keep an eye out right here. We're excited to celebrate our history as we look forward to so many good things to come.
One of the good things to come is a Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center wine label! We are working on the designs and wording, and hope to debut them online before the holidays. If you are or happen to know a wine drinker, a bottle of Spirit Chardonnay or McKinley Malbec may be just the thing! Of course we urge you to please drink responsibly. We'll have details on how to order and how your purchase will benefit the Center in just a few weeks. Cheers!
Congratulations to our latest candy contest winner Luke from Washington! Luke's best guess was only 5 pieces away from the actual number of chocolates in our jar on the fundraising table in the Naturalist Cabin. Truth be told, we called it the "fun table" this summer, and it was. Thanks to all of you who stopped by and left a dollar or two with us. We hope those temporary tattoos washed off in time for school to start and those cookies didn't tempt you too much. We enjoyed every conversation and question, and hope to see you back again next summer.
Finally this week, the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is pleased to announce our 2nd Annual Autumn Discovery Photography Contest for amateur and professional photographers! The contest will run from September 1st - October 31st, so plan your fall visit now. Deadline for submission is November 1st, and we've already begun receiving entries! Six winners will be announced and awarded in the following categories: Amateur Bear, Amateur Wolf, and Amateur Raptor photograph, and Professional Bear, Professional Wolf, and Professional Raptor photograph. The winning photographs will be featured in both print and digital format in future newsletters, marketing and fundraising materials, and social media, like right here in email newsletters. For more information, call the Center or reply to this newsletter.
Your support makes a world of difference to the animals here at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. We hope to hear from you and see you soon.

Eye Candy
Photographs and Artwork from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center
We are honored to have many artists and photographers visit and support the GWDC. Their vision and talents inspire and enliven our work here, so we thought it would be nice to feature some of their work in every issue of our newsletter. If you'd like to see your artwork here, send us an image! Paintings, sculptures, and mixed media are welcome too.
Our thanks to Nancy Wolfe and Gretchen Heine for this week's photographs.

We hope you enjoy this issue, learn a little something, and feel like you are here with us for just a few minutes. It's a pretty special place to be. Have a great couple of weeks and a fantastic summer, and we'll look forward to seeing you soon.
If you remember in the spring, we celebrated the 18th birthday of Selway, an original member of the Gallatin pack here at the Center. Our thoughts are with Mission: Wolf on their loss of Selway this past Sunday. She was transferred to Mission: Wolf in 2003 where she lived a long, happy life. Thank you Mission: Wolf for taking such great care of this special girl. Farewell beautiful Selway, run free with your pack. Thank you to all the people who loved and supported her! She will be missed.
Thanks again for keeping up with us and for all you do.
Sincerely,
|

Gift Shop Happenings
|
Greetings from the Gift Shop!
The photo below summarizes this time of year perfectly. Flowers are still blooming, pavement is wet and skies are grey, and draft stoppers (see the basket under the flower pot?) are a handy thing to have around as temperatures start to dip. The garden stakes pictured here are blown glass, and at 50% off $39.00, are a steal of a deal. The draft stoppers are 50% off $17.95, so grab one of those too. Don't forget all the goodies waiting for you once you come on in.
The Gift Shop (not the Center!) will be closed for inventory next Tuesday, October 1st. Everything will be back to normal and ready for purchase October 2nd. If you've been eyeing something special or thinking about your holiday shopping, now is the time to make those purchases.
Thank you for supporting and shopping at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center! We'll see you soon!
