Around The Center
What's Happening at the GWDC
July has been busy. Despite Roosevelt's laid-back look, we are NOT resting on our laurels. With record-breaking attendance and a host of projects going on, this month has each of us putting our best foot forward, only at a slightly faster pace. One of the best aspects of the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center is how the animals and the programming can stay steady while the crowds and the activity level around here ebb and flow. No matter how many folks are here viewing the habitats and the programs, we enjoy talking with individuals, enjoying and interpreting individual animal's behaviors, and working to make the Center a better place.
We haven't just been busy here. This month staff members have been representing the Center and the animals across the region. Appearances and programs at the Nature Conservancy's Flat Ranch in Idaho, the Big Sky Farmer's Market, a gathering of more than 80 Wildlife Conservation Society members and guests in Ennis, and the Montana Folk Festival in Butte have kept us on the road and out of trouble. We've had a great time meeting new people and greeting some long-time friends of the Center. Construction on the bear diet kitchen has been humming along. The benches in the amphitheater are almost ready for some very comfortable sitting, and we have new mulch in the habitats and the landscaped areas around the Center from recycled trees. Yes, even trees can be recycled. The Gift Shop and Admissions crew can't seem to slow down either, between putting out new merchandise, answering questions and helping visitors, and greeting all the folks and families coming and going. We love this time of year, and hope you'll come visit soon and see the action. Remember if you have any questions, or just want to know more about any aspect of the Center, you can always give us a call at 406.646.7001, reply to this newsletter, or email info@grizzlydiscoveryctr.com. We will try to keep you informed and up to date in as many ways as we can. Your involvement and interest in what we do keeps us doing it! We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thanks again for tuning in.

Bears, Wolves, and Birds
(Oh My!)
Animal Updates
The wolves are fishing again! This week we received another shipment of live fish, and the animals are taking full advantage of what this means. They benefit not only from the nutritional value of fresh fish, but from the hunting and the catching! The bears, birds, and of course the wolves all partake when we receive these generous donations. As you probably know, the birds-of-prey at the GWDC are all non-releasable because of some sort of injury or circumstance that leaves them unable to survive in the wild. Their stories vary, but one thing is the same: they are healthy and thriving in their environment. Whether they display neurological tics or pupils that are different sizes, the birds are well cared for and at home in their habitats. They are fun to watch, and they definitely have personalities! One of the eagles frequently engages with the animal keepers, and the American Kestrel carries on long conversations with the education staff. Come get to know the individuals here at the Center. The bears are beating the heat with ice treats and lots of splashing in the pond. ABCFox Montana News just did a story on the animals at the Center, and how bears and wolves stay cool on hot days. You can view it or read about it here. After months of enticing 101 to play with him finally proved successful, young Roosevelt continues to spend time with 31-year-old Sow 101. They have been spotted foraging and eating together in the outdoor habitat, which is notable for her. It's heart-warming to watch this relationship develop.
Stay tuned here and we'll keep you posted on the reason we're all here - the animals! Remember to check out our webcams when you're wondering what's going on around at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center or wanting to stay connected until your next visit. Every issue of our email newsletter will have updates on our animals, and we will still be sending quarterly newsletters through the mail. Read more about these Howls & Growls newsletters below, and please come visit us soon.

Education
Knowledge Is a Powerful Tool
Programming and curriculum development are keeping the Education staff busy these days. Crowds are gathering inside and out to learn more about the animals, the ecosystem, and how to safely live and recreate in bear country. We will be introducing a couple new programs soon, and we've established a new audio tour visitors can access via their cell phones! More on this in the next issue!

Interns and Summer Rec Students
|
One of the most exciting new projects is the Bear Safe Community Project. Our Education interns and staff are working hand in hand with West Yellowstone's Summer Recreation participants. They have been playing educational games, developing the Bear-Safe Community checklist and curriculum, and involving parents and residents in the community. Other school groups are touring, and outreach programs continue to keep staff busy. Keeper Kids is almost always full at this time of year, so if you're planning to participate during your visit, please register early!

AJ talks with a school group
|
If you're interested in visiting the GWDC with your family or with your students, or if you'd like to sponsor a Teaching Trunk or outreach program, let us know. One of the Center's naturalists can visit your school for special assemblies, programs or activities. As you know, some of our birds-of-prey can travel for such programs as can our large collection of wolf and bear artifacts. We will customize the program or the Teaching Trunk for your group and areas of special interest.

Developments
New and Exciting Opportunities to Support the GWDC
It's the little things that matter - we are thrilled to see items from our Summer Wish List showing up in the mail and in person. Thank you for the construction paper, Kongs, extracts, nuts, dried fruit, crunchy treats, paintbrushes, and so much more. Your generosity is astounding. And really fun for the animals and staff to unwrap!
It's also the big things. This summer there is a vital need to create additional shelter for the young grizzlies Grant and Roosevelt and for the High Country omega wolf Leopold. We will be mailing out an appeal in the next few days to help raise money to build an additional bear den and a mound in the wolf habitat. These additions are time-sensitive and specific, and we definitely need your help.
Indoor enclosures provide bears with privacy, security, and quiet. Grant and Roosevelt have been sharing a den since they came to the Center as much smaller eight-month-old cubs. As they grow and develop, competing for food or experiencing conflict in a single den will eventually lead to stress. With nine bears and only eight dens we knew this day would come, but like anyone watching their young grow, we hoped it wouldn't come so soon. It's time to give Grant and Roosevelt their own safe places so they will continue to thrive.
In the High Country wolf pack, Leopold is the omega or lowest-ranking wolf. Sweet and playful, he constantly invites the other wolves in his pack to interact. Because of his status, many of his approaches are met with aggressive behavior that keeps him in his place socially and physically. We want to help shield Leopold from being overly stressed by these instinctive pack dynamics. By constructing a mound in the High Country exhibit with a built-in den underneath, we can enhance the outdoor habitat for all the wolves and provide Leopold with a refuge below the mound. Your support will protect Leopold and the High Country Pack from potential altercations while allowing the pack new places to climb, hunt, and hide.
We hope you can help us with these immediate needs this summer. Whether you respond to the written appeal in the mail, or use the website to "Donate Now", your support makes a world of difference to the animals here at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. We hope to hear from you and see you soon.

Eye Candy
Photographs and Artwork from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center
We are honored to have many artists and photographers visit and support the GWDC. Their vision and talents inspire and enliven our work here, so we thought it would be nice to feature some of their work in every issue of our newsletter. If you'd like to see your artwork here, send us an image! Paintings, sculptures, and mixed media are welcome too.
Our thanks to Steve Henry, Gretchen Heine, Kimberly Shields and Kathy Pallach for this week's artwork and photographs.
