Hello and welcome!

Thanks for dropping in to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, a not-for-profit, AZA-accredited wildlife park and educational facility, with a diverse crew of staff and volunteers. We're glad you're here with us, and we hope to see you in person soon.

As usual, there's a lot going on in this issue. Enjoy the photos and the news. Get to know our amazing cast of characters, and share us with your friends. Please come visit us, right here in West Yellowstone, relax and watch the animals, or participate in one of our interactive programs and displays. Until then we wish you all the best. We hope we can bring a little discovery and excitement your way. See you soon!

Sod Amphitheater
Our outdoor amphitheater is almost ready for the public!
Around The Center
What's Happening at the GWDC

Happy 4th of July to you and yours! We hope this holiday will be safe, fun, and meaningful. Don't forget your sunscreen, and protective eye-wear isn't a bad idea if you're a fireworks aficionado. Call us fuddy-duddies, but we work with wild animals. Safety first!

Whether you celebrate with a hometown parade, a dusty rodeo, or a few sparklers in the driveway, we hope you take a moment to salute all the good things our country stands for. We expect to be busy on Thursday, more about that below, but we hope to pause at some point and enjoy the holiday. Happy summer, happy 4th, and happy Independence Day!

We have been busy with visitors, programming, and all sorts of projects here at the Center. As you can see, we have the sod down and watered in the amphitheater, and we're working to attach the bench material, do some paving and fencing, and put finishing touches on the space. You should hear about a grand opening later this summer!

We will be attending the Montana Folk Festival next weekend, July 13th and 14th, if you want to come visit our booth and learn more about the Center and our plans for the future. The theme for this year's festival will focus on the influence of rivers: "Gathering at the Headwaters: The Influence of Rivers and Riparian Lifeways in Montana and the Mountain West." We thought it would be a great time and place to talk about our upcoming riparian exhibit and greet a new group of potential friends and visitors. If you're close to Butte Montana next weekend, stop on by! It's the Northwest's Largest FREE Outdoor Music Festival.

Remember if you have any questions, or just want to know more about any aspect of the Center, you can always give us a call at 406.646.7001, reply to this newsletter, or email
info@grizzlydiscoveryctr.com. We will try to keep you informed and up to date in as many ways as we can. Your involvement and interest in what we do keeps us doing it! We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thanks again for tuning in.

Animal Updates

So what will we be busy doing on the 4th? Besides greeting visitors and trying to stay cool, what could possibly make tomorrow any different than most summer days here at the Center? Well, the bears will be enjoying gigantic ice treats like the one shown here. The animal keepers have been slowly creating these humongous popsicles with layers of fruit, ice and other flavors, freezing them after each addition, in preparation for today. The bears may not have known it was a holiday last year when this photo was taken, but they seemed to take interest in the special treats.

The wolves just received a generous donation of extracts and flavorings. They will be sniffing out scents like mango, vanilla, lemon, and other exotic enrichments. Thank you for these exciting gifts!

The aviaries have been well trafficked lately. It's such a peaceful spot back there, and the birds are so much fun to watch and listen to. We invite you to come spend some time with the raptors. There are several outreach programs scheduled for the coming weeks, so if you're in the area but can't make it all the way to the outdoor aviaries here at the Center, maybe a few of the birds will be coming to a program near you! Several of our birds-of-prey were in Ennis and at the Nature Conservancy's Flat Ranch in Idaho this week. Call us for more information about onsite and outreach programs.

Nakiska has been entertaining and educating visitors twice weekly for the last month or so. Her training as a Karelian Bear Dog is the highlight of the Living with Bears program on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This special breed is used to help with bear management to scare bears away from human areas. Nakiska is learning how to be an ambassador for the breed. She helps teach visitors how to live safely in bear country.

Stay tuned here and we'll keep you posted on the reason we're all here - the animals! Remember to check out our webcams when you're wondering what's going on around at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center or wanting to stay connected until your next visit. Every issue of our email newsletter will have updates on our animals, and we will still be sending quarterly newsletters through the mail. Read more about these Howls & Growls newsletters below, and please come visit us soon.

Education
Knowledge Is a Powerful Tool

It's always fun when a celebrity comes to visit, and when they turn out to be as nice as they seem on tv, it's a special treat. Samantha Brown from the Travel Channel was here at the GWDC last Wednesday filming the animals, visitors, and Education staff for a new show called "Vacation Cash." It was an exciting day, and we are looking forward to viewing the episode in the winter (and not just to remember how the habitat looks without snow!) Thanks to Sam and crew for spending time with us and for creating some very exciting memories for a few of our visitors!

Another celebrity was here just this week. We told you about Ted Rechlin in the last newsletter, and previewed his artwork on the new
Trophic Cascade sign in the Naturalist Cabin. Ted is also the author and illustrator of "Silvertip, A Year in the Life of a Yellowstone Grizzly," and his NEW book "Epsilon, A Yellowstone Wolf Story." He spent the day with us Tuesday, signing books in the morning and viewing the animals in the afternoon. The Education team and the Center were honored to have this talented artist here to help educate visitors about bears and wolves.

Our Education interns and staff are busy with West Yellowstone's Summer Recreation participants. They have been playing educational games, working on a Bear-Safe Community checklist and curriculum, and last night hosted an Open House for parents in the community. With upcoming outreach programs and lots of holiday visitors, they are plenty busy with all sorts of learning activities and interactions.

If you're interested in visiting the GWDC with your family or with your students, or if you'd like to sponsor a Teaching Trunk or outreach program, let us know. One of the Center's naturalists can visit your school for special assemblies, programs or activities. As you know, some of our birds-of-prey can travel for such programs as can our large collection of wolf and bear artifacts. We will customize the program or the Teaching Trunk for your group and areas of special interest.

New and Exciting Opportunities to Support the GWDC

Just as the 4th of July reminds us that we're all part of a great country, sometimes occasions arise that remind us that we're part of a great town. No, we're not talking about the West Yellowstone 4th of July Parade, although that is quite an event!

No, we're proud to be a part of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition's Cycle Greater Yellowstone, "the first great ride in the last great place." Some tag line, don't you think? This August, more than 800 riders will be participating in a bicycling event that will spotlight what a special place the Yellowstone ecosystem is.  The idea for the ride is simple: "bring a bunch of people to this amazing place, let them find out how and why it's so cool, take exceptionally good care of them along the way, and inspire them to spread the word about the place and the ride - and then more people will take even better care of it." Riders will leave West Yellowstone Sunday August 17th, and finish their journey in Red Lodge on Saturday August 24th. West Yellowstone is the kick-off community, and we're proud to welcome riders to town and to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center.

Our Fundraising Table in the Naturalist Cabin is off to a great start this summer. We've been so lucky to have great volunteers and enthusiastic visitors so far. The chocolate chip cookies and the temporary tattoos are a big hit, and we have more fun surprises waiting for you in the weeks to come. Stop by and visit! Big thanks to Jayne, Maggie, Joseph, Gretchen, and Peggy for your time and expertise. It's a fun way to support the animals and learn more about the Center.

Finally, as we move into another busy summer, we just want to pause and thank you for your visits, your gifts, your surprises in the mail, your questions, your phone calls, and all you do to support us. We are grateful that you are involved with the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. We hope to hear from you and see you soon.

Photographs and Artwork from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center

We are honored to have many artists and photographers visit and support the GWDC. Their vision and talents inspire and enliven our work here, so we thought it would be nice to feature some of their work in every issue of our newsletter. If you'd like to see your artwork here, send us an image! Paintings, sculptures, and mixed media are welcome too.

Our thanks to Ted Rechlin, Gretchen Heine, and Kim Shields for this week's artwork and photographs.

We hope you enjoy this issue, learn a little something, and feel like you are here with us for just a few minutes. It's a pretty special place to be. Have a great couple of weeks and a fantastic summer, and we'll look forward to seeing you soon.

We leave you this week with a glimpse of Tuesday's book signing event in the Gift Shop. Read all about Ted Rechlin and see his artwork above, and come see his contributions to the GWDC right here this summer! Thanks again for keeping up with us and for all you do.

Sincerely,
