Around The Center
What's Happening at the GWDC
It's been busy at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center lately, and a little noisy if you want to know the truth. We have all sorts of projects going on to shape up for summer. We are replacing the chain link fence in front of the bear habitat with a much more comfortable-for-leaning-and-looking wooden model. We are improving the wolf habitats, putting the finishing touches on the outdoor amphitheater, and adding an additional den for the bears, which you'll hear more about soon.
We are also repairing or replacing things like pavement, air conditioners, and interpretive signs. We're cutting grass, dusting pollen off benches, and washing windows. We're unpacking boxes in the Gift Shop and writing curriculum for programs. Newsletters, thank you notes, outreach programs, and of course animal care and enrichment are keeping us all on our toes. We are ready for summer, and ready for you. Come see what else in new at the GWDC.
Remember if you have any questions, or just want to know more about any aspect of the Center, you can always give us a call at 406.646.7001, reply to this newsletter, or email info@grizzlydiscoveryctr.com. We will try to keep you informed and up to date in as many ways as we can. Your involvement and interest in what we do keeps us doing it! We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Thanks again for tuning in.

Bears, Wolves, and Birds
(Oh My!)
Animal Updates
Judging by the carpet of dandelions in the habitats and the constant splashing of the animals, it must be summer. The bears have been swimming, the wolves have been pawing the water, and yesterday one of the bald eagles caught a fish! Wolf Enrichment is now taking place at 3:00 and 7:00 p.m., which leaves lots of time during the day to view the wolves napping and interacting in their habitats. They've been howling most days in the early afternoons. Both the wolves and the bears (and the staff!) have begun receiving enrichment items from the Summer Wish List! Big thanks go out to friends of the Center who have sent sugar cane, vitamins, and a fantastic box of goodies for humans! Your generosity is staggering.
Stay tuned here and we'll keep you posted on the reason we're all here: the bears, wolves, birds, and our bear dog Nakiska, who will be participating in our summer programs! Remember to check out our webcams when you're wondering what's going on around here or wanting to stay connected until your next visit. Every issue of our email newsletter will have updates on our animals, and we will still be sending quarterly newsletters through the mail. Our next Howls & Growls quarterly newsletter will be sent out in just a couple weeks. If you want to be added to our H&G mailing list, give us a call. We'd love to greet you and tell you how to join up.

Education
Knowledge Is a Powerful Tool
West Yellowstone and the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center were highlighted last week in National Parks Traveler, an online magazine of commentary, news and life in America's Parks. The feature article explored the historical and modern appeal of West Yellowstone as a gateway community to Yellowstone National Park, and listed the GWDC as the top attraction in town. Not to brag or anything.
The image above and the following description are from the article, which you can read here. "This whimsical poster was created in 1946 by Walter Oehrle, a commercial artist for the Union Pacific Railroad, to promote West Yellowstone as the best entry point for visiting Yellowstone National Park." The poster is from the collection of Alfred Runte, an expert on both national parks and railroads. We've come a long way since the days of cartoon bears playing golf on the outskirts of West Yellowstone. The education staff engages in meaningful discussions and programs daily to change the way visitors and locals view bears, interact with wildlife, and perceive predators in and around Yellowstone National Park.
As our understanding of bears, wolves, and birds-of-prey increases, and as research shows the value of predators in every ecosystem, we are trying to incorporate this knowledge into the educational experience of visitors to the GWDC. We are starting to talk more about Trophic Cascade, we have a new Trophic Cascade sign in the viewing area, and we will soon be introducing a Trophic Cascade program to our lineup. What is it exactly? Trophic means related to nutrition, and of course cascade means a series of steps, so we're talking about each step in the healthy food chain of an ecosystem, and what happens when a vital step is removed. In a nutshell, the conservation of top predators helps to preserve the structure and processes of ecosystems in which they live. We continue to help visitors observe, appreciate and understand the animals here at the Center and in the wild.
If you're interested in visiting the GWDC with your family or with your students, or if you'd like to sponsor a Teaching Trunk or outreach program, let us know. One of the Center's naturalists can visit your school for special assemblies, programs or activities. As you know, some of our birds-of-prey can travel for such programs as can our large collection of wolf and bear artifacts. We will customize the program or the Teaching Trunk for your group and areas of special interest.

Developments
New and Exciting Opportunities to Support the GWDC
As you can see, we are looking for a few willing volunteers to help the Development Office this summer. If you find yourself in the area with a few extra hours on your hands, we'd love to put you to work on behalf of the animals and the Center. Give us a call or send an email for more information! Even an hour can make a big difference!
One of the things our staff and volunteers will be doing this summer involves face-painting. If that doesn't pique your curiosity, what will? We are hosting a table in the Naturalist Cabin this summer where we will be answering questions; accepting raffle tickets, memberships, and adoptions; collecting postcards from you to your loved ones to send home; yes, painting faces (and hands and arms); and selling posters, buttons, cookies, and other goodies to support the Center. Be sure to stop by and say hello, participate in the fun activities, and make this summer unforgettable for the GWDC.
Finally, as we move into another busy summer, we just want to pause and thank you for your visits, your gifts, your surprises in the mail, your questions, your phone calls, and all you do to support us. We are grateful that you are involved with the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center. We hope to hear from you and see you soon.

Eye Candy
Photographs and Artwork from the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center
We are honored to have many artists and photographers visit and support the GWDC. Their vision and talents inspire and enliven our work here, so we thought it would be nice to feature some of their work in every issue of our newsletter. If you'd like to see your artwork here, send us an image! Paintings, sculptures, and mixed media are welcome too.
Our thanks to Janet Goodban, Gretchen Heine, Erika Kuc, and Jen Holyer for this week's photographs.

Gift Shop Happenings
|
Greetings from the Gift Shop!
It's shaping up to be a terrific summer. We have new faces, new concessions, and new gift and souvenir items in store for you. Home items, books, great hats, yummy milkshakes, and even pajamas are waiting to tempt you. Come in and shop soon.
We are excited to welcome a new vendor to the Gift Shop! For the last couple of summers, West Yellowstone has been host to chainsaw artists x and x. You've probably seen their fantastic carvings of bears and other animals if you've visited the Center recently. This year they will be sharing their talent with us. We will be the fortunate hosts for some of their carvings beginning this week in the Gift Shop.
Thank you for supporting and shopping at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center!
