Three Tips For a Thriving Spring
A curled up little pine tree poking out through the melting snow about to emerge into Tadasana (Mountain Pose). This image is a reminder that Primavera (Spring) has arrived. The baby tree shakes off her winter coat without succumbing to the latest fasting or juicing trend. She adjusts, adapts, and allows herself to naturally unravel into the full alignment of the seasonal change.
Just like the tree we are also an expression of nature and according to Ayurveda the five elements that expressed in nature are the very elements that make up who we are: Fire, Earth, Water, Air, and Ether. Just as every season creates a shift in the dominant element(s) we must also shift in order to stay in balance. So, as we move from Winter's heavier, denser and colder climate into Spring's lighter, warmer vibrancy the body asks for a little less Earth and Water and an increase of the Fire element.
Balancing the heat element that naturally occurs in the body is key when moving from Winter to Spring. When the flame of Agni (digestive fire) is ignited and balanced, we are able to better metabolize toxins. Not enough Agni can be experienced by the body in many different ways energy levels, sleep patterns, and overall emotional states can be effected.
Ayurveda can help us do what mother nature does so naturally, making seasonal transitions to integrate and re-balance the shifting of the five elements. What may have kept us warm, cozy and rooted in the Winter may now feel heavy and lethargic in Spring. The simple act of clearing clutter from our desk, going for a walk or spending time outdoors can be what helps us feel better, lighter, and more creative during this Spring season.
