Pfizer Grantee Spotlight: Purdue University College of Pharmacy

 

One of the Pfizer IGLC grantees, Purdue University College of Pharmacy, has been working with Giant Eagle, a regional supermarket chain with 229 stores throughout Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland that serves 4.6 million customers annually. Among Giant Eagle's 36,000 employees are 900 pharmacists, who work in the pharmacies embedded in a large percentage of their supermarkets. Prior to their customer-focused Ask-Advise-Refer initiative, Giant Eagle conducted a pharmacist-driven, employee-targeted tobacco cessation program that yielded positive results. The initiative utilized a mix of pharmacists-led small group cessation counseling and one-on-one, individual cessation counseling sessions. 70-85% of participating Giant Eagle employees quit smoking within 30 days of their final counseling session with 45-55% continuing to abstain after 3 months.

 

The success of this pharmacists-driven counseling, coupled with the demographic similarity between Giant Eagle's employee population and its customer population encouraged Giant Eagle leadership to expand their tobacco cessation effort to their customers. Furthermore, 712 Giant Eagle pharmacists were educated via either a live or an on-demand Ask-Advise-Refer tobacco cessation counseling training program, and they anticipate that each participating pharmacist will counsel 50-100 patients in addition to their expected goal of 150 patients per year, and an estimated 35,600-71,200 customers will be asked about their smoking status in states of West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

Speakers Dr. Sharon Levy and Dr. Kimber Richter highlighted marijuana legalization- a divided debate in the United States. Both speakers noted this public health issue has been long overlooked due to insufficient longevity data of health effects, and elusive recognition from health officials. Due to the overwhelming toll tobacco has had on lives lost, quality of life, and economic expenditures to reverse the industry's adverse effects; Levy and Richter note there should be caution about allowing the new and expanding marijuana industry, regulated by the free market to develop.

  • Reverses AIDS-related wasting and holds promise as an antispasmodic and analgesic agent

  • Adverse mental and physical health effects, including respiratory and brain cancers
  • Increase in medical and social costs
  • Increase in marijuana-related vehicle crashes

2015 CDC Tips from Former Smokers Campaign

The CDC has continued its Tips From Former Smokers campaign this year by expanding its efforts to engage faith leaders and organizations, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and other healthcare providers and specialists. Please click here to access the Tips Download Center, where you can download presentation materials, images, PSA files, and print materials that can be disseminated to extend the reach of the campaign. The 2015 campaign is scheduled to begin running nationally on March 30th and end on August 16th. 

 

The American College of Cardiology's Cardio-Smart interactive tool answers the question, "How Does Smoking Increase Your Risk of Heart Attack?" This tool measures how smoking, independent of other risk factors, affects your chance of having a heart attack in the next 10 years. The risk assessment was created by the U.S. National Cholesterol Education Program, part of the National Institutes of Health. Click here.

  • What does your score mean? Your score will appear in values from 1% to 99%. If your score is Nonsmoker: 2% and Smoker: 6%, it means that for your age and gender 2 out of 100 nonsmokers compared with 6 out of 100 smokers will have a heart attack in the next 10 years. In this example, smokers are 3 times more likely than nonsmokers to have a heart attack in the next 10 years.

 

Community Health Status Indicators (CHSI)
CDC released the updated CHSI online tool that produces public health profiles for all 3,143 counties in the United States. Each profile includes key indicators of health outcomes, which describes the population health status of a county and factors that have the potential to influence health outcomes, such as health care access and quality, health behaviors, social factors, and the physical environment.
