ILA Sets Ratification Vote
The ILA has set April 9, 2013 for a ratification vote on the coast wide master contract the ILA and USMX have agreed upon. There are approximately 14,500 ILA members eligible to vote on the six year contract and supplemental agreements that cover work rules and other port-specific issues. The ILA and USMX agreed upon the contract on Thursday March 7, 2013. The International Longshoremen's Association President Harold Daggett, other officials, predict the agreement will win easy approval.

Work Shifts for NY/NJ
The Ports of New York and New Jersey unique work system will be replaced with work shifts that are similar to U.S ports that are under the new ILA local contract. Work groups will now work in shifts rather than working until a ship is loaded and discharged. This new work system is set to begin in October of 2014 so there is time to hire and train new workers to replace early retirees.
NYSA President Joseph Curto states "we believe that the continuous operation system has prevented us from achieving the productivity we need to achieve." The existing work shifts require a group that is formed with a foreman, three cane operator and six longshoreman, as well as several terminal-based drivers and checkers. The new contract calls for five longshoreman and reduced relief staffing on the terminal.
The new work shifts that are being set in place should improve safety as workers will not be on the clock for 24 hours or more at a time.
