One Month Extension: FDA Food Facility Registration
Every other year registration to the FDA for the Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA) is required for any facility that works with food. The registration deadline had been December 31, 2012. However, due to delays in the registration process and changes in the FSMA this date has been extended to January 31, 2013. Although the deadline has been extended, food facilities are encouraged to submit their registrations as soon as possible.
The FDA has published two documents to help provide more detailed information on the food facility registration process: "What you need to know about the registration of food facilities- small entity compliance guide", and "Questions and answers regarding food facility registration (Fifth Edition)".
These documents are available on the FDA website. Click on the below FDA logo to be directed to their site.
Please be aware that the FSMA now imposes new burdens and potential liabilities on entities designated as U.S. agents to foreign food facilities to include charging $289.00 per hour for any time required to re-inspect food facilities. This has the potential to result in fees reaching to thousands of dollars depending on what is required for re-inspection. The FDA is holding the U.S. agent personally responsible for payment of these fees.
