Post Hurricane Sandy Update - 11/7

Below is a recap on the current status of the Post Hurricane Sandy Clean Up and Recovery in New York and New Jersey.

JFK International Airport is fully operational. All carriers have resumed direct service to the and all temporary flight diversions via Chicago have been suspended.

All ocean port terminals are open and fully operational. There are approximately 50 vessels in New York Harbor waiting to be berthed so discharge operations can begin. Liberty anticipates delays to continue through the coming week as carriers work to process post clean up backlogs.

All New York and New Jersey warehouses are open for business and are moving consolidation containers from the piers as quickly as possible. Liberty is working with all our warehouse partners to expedite shipments as freight becomes available.

Rail services are also fully operational. This includes on dock and off dock rail services for both the CSX Intermodal and Norfolk Southern. The embargo by these carriers for rail service to the Northeast has been cancelled.

Fuel and chassis shortages remain a concern in this area. It is undetermined when supplies of fuel and chassis will return to normal levels. Liberty will be monitoring these issues closely and will report updates as they become available through our global facts e-newsletters.

Several steamship companies that diverted vessels to Norfolk, VA have declared Force Majeure. They are giving FCL importers the option clear cargo and arrange final delivery directly from Norfolk or to move containers inbond (by rail or vessel) to New York. Additional charges will be incurred for the second option. Liberty is reaching out to our customers who have FCL containers that were routed to Norfolk, VA to see if they prefer clearances in Norfolk, or if they will accept the additional charges to move their containers to New York.

For LCL customers whose freight is in containers that have been discharged in Norfolk, the steamship lines are arranging to move the containers back to New York where the containers can be stripped and the cargo forwarded to the appropriate final destination. Extra charges are expected in this instance as well.
