Register Today: Connecting the Dots Between Housing & Schools

Register today for Housing Virginia's 2014 Policy Symposium Housing and Schools: Connecting the Dots between where Kids Live and Where They Learn. The event will be held on Wednesday, June 18th from 10am - 3:15pm at the VCU Student Commons in Richmond.
Despite the fact that the connections between housing opportunity and school quality are pervasive in our communities, educators and housing providers rarely talk and even less frequently plan together. In fact, they speak entirely different languages. Realtors see every day how residential choices are often shaped by school quality and educators see how housing stability has a direct connection to student performance. How do we improve housing and schools by aligning the way we shape policy for both? These are some of the issues that will be explored as Housing Virginia and the Wilder School at VCU co-host a one-day statewide conference on June 18.
Jeanne Jehl, consultant to The Annie E. Casey Foundation and Maurice Jones, Secretary of Commerce & Trade, will speak at the opening plenary session. This will be followed by break out sessions that focus on various aspects of this important, but often ignored subject. Chris Estes, Executive Director of the National Housing Conference, is the invited luncheon speaker. With this one day session as a kick-off, Housing Virginia plans to shine a spotlight on this issue for the next year through local dialogues and bringing in examples of communities that have made progress in coordinating school policy with housing policy.
Visit the Housing Virginia site for a detailed program schedule.
Make it a two-day housing event! The symposium will precede the Virginia Housing Coalition's annual awards luncheon, which will also be held in Richmond on June 19th. See the article below for details!
