Governor's Housing Conference Edition
Housing Virginia Releases Preliminary Findings for Hampton Roads Workforce Housing Study     

Dr. Lisa Sturtevant, Executive Director of the National Housing Conference's Center for Housing Policy announced preliminary findings from a workforce housing needs assessment at a press briefing during the Governor's Housing Conference.  The full study will be released in the spring of 2014.  Housing Virginia and the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission are partnering with NHC and a number of local housing groups to sponsor the report.

The study looks at projected job growth in the Hampton Roads region over the next 20 years, and estimates the number of new housing units needed to accommodate its future workforce.
 
HV Launches Housing StoryWorks Video Project         
Faith Linton and Kim Phillipi from CCMG LLC in Hampton told their story of stopping the foreclosure of a multifamily development and launching a program to inspire youth to stay in school during their StoryWorks interview at the GHC.

Fifteen conference attendees and local residents launched Housing StoryWorks  by answering the question  "How did affordable housing change an individual, a family, a neighborhood or community?" in short video sessions.
2013 Virginia Housing Awards Winners Announced  
 
Each year at the Governor's Housing Conference, the Virginia Housing Awards recognizes outstanding and innovative efforts in crafting effective solutions for the Commonwealth's complex array of housing needs.  Awards are presented for best practices in green building, mixed-use development, affordable housing, housing preservation and housing development.
      
HOUSING 2020: What is Re-Shaping Housing?
    
Bob Adams presented the "Demographics" section of the Housing 2020 to a crowded room on Friday morning of the Governor's Housing Conference and Housing Virginia Board members Laura Lafayette and Orlando Artze provided responses from unique perspectives. The interactive, video-based presentation focuses on how four "mega-trends" in demographics, economics, finance and sustainability are changing the nature of housing during this decade.  The presentation invites the audience to engage in a lively discussion.

Economic Impact Calculator for Residential Construction: New Housing Virginia Tool Out in Beta Form
During the Governor's Housing Conference, Housing Virginia released a beta version of its newest online tool: the Economic Calculator for New Residential Construction. The calculator can estimate job creation, gross fiscal revenues, and economic growth that results from new residential construction.  The tool produces both short term and the long term economic outcomes based on the locality, type of housing, total number of units, and average square footage per unit of a proposed project.

Regional Collaboration Works for Housing and the Economy   
 
Regional Collaboration, Housing, and Economic Development Strategies that Get Results focused on the importance of collaboration and the links between housing and effective regional economic development initiatives. Lisa Sturtevant, Executive Director of the Center for Policy and Vice President for Research at the National Housing Conference, moderated the session and cited her research in both Northern Virginia and Richmond that shows a significant projected increase in jobs over the next twenty years.  Dr. Sturtevant focused attention on the relationship of employment to housing and   noted the need for the housing supply to keep up in order for these regions to realize their economic potential.  Dr. Sturtevant is working on a similar study in Hampton Roads to be released next year.
Straight Talk on Housing Concludes GHC with Diverse Perspectives  
 
Janneke Ratcliffe, Senior Fellow at American Progress and Mark Calabria, Director of Financial Regulation Studies at the Cato Institute, closed out the 2013 Governor's Housing Conference with a spirited discussion on the role of the federal government in housing, housing finance reform, and the changing trends in housing. 
From Homeless to Harvard: Overcoming Adversity, Moving toward Possibility   
 
Liz Murray kicked off Thursday's sessions at the Governor's Housing Conference with her empowering story of overcoming a challenging childhood,  living with drug-addicted parents and years of homelessness as a teenager in New York City, and eventually changing her perspective and  graduating from Harvard University.

Ms. Murray began her story by walking conference attendees through some of the painful parts of her childhood life in the Bronx, when she and her sister frequently had to deal with finding food on their own.
