Mortgage Rates Spike, then Retreat

Something that we all knew would eventually happen has begun. Mortgage rates are rising.
What we didn't expect was for rates to rise so fast and so quickly. Responding to a hint in late April from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke that the Fed might begin to take its foot off the accelerator and ease off QE2, the market responded by driving rates up. From the low 3% range to the mid 4%, rates have jumped over 100 basis points in the last four months. The chart above shows the sharp rise since the beginning of the year.
Is it time to panic? No.

It appears that investors are responding to strong market demand and demographic changes favoring multi-family housing options.
