Help and Healing for Babies and Toddlers
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and an important time of year to make sure we all remain aware of and vigilant to incidences of child abuse in our community.  Angels Foster Care is a leader in protecting children from child abuse by providing a safe, stable, and loving foster home where children who have experienced abuse or neglect--and the majority of children in our community who enter foster care is because of neglect--can heal and have a soft place to land while they and their family begin the process of repair and reunification.

While none of us want to turn a blind eye to child abuse, studies now show that the most common reasons for child abuse are because of parental stress and isolation so when we aren't engaged with the families and children around us, we aren't in a position to help or make a call for help when a problem might be developing.  Additionally, these studies also reveal that only 13% of communities in our country are labeled as "highly supportive" of families in distress meaning are places where families with high risk for abuse have interventions and help before crisis strikes.  Also, The Protective Factors are often identified in healthy children and families. Parent resilience, social connections, knowledge of parenting and child development, support, and children's social and emotional development all contribute to creating strong families. When communities are built to support parents, this approach helps reduce risk factors and promotes family well-being. (reference: childtrends.org)

Finally, we all know that child abuse has a large ripple effect on a child's development, ability to form healthy relationships, their physical health, as well as on the community at large but the negative effects can be greater than many of us realize. We urge you to become familiar with the important study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE's) completed recently that thoroughly investigates how these ACE's have long term implications for children.  A helpful research brief on this issue can be accessed here.

High quality foster care is one way we can help children suffering from child abuse and neglect. Please remember and honor the wonderful foster parents in the Angels Foster Care program--or any program helping to care for these vulnerable young lives--when you get a chance.

Sincerely,
The Angels Foster Care Team

The Kennedy Family
Meet Julie and Robert who welcomed baby David, as well as completed their adoption, in 2015. The Kennedys
have a busy, active family and have always enjoyed parenting. Their two older children, Jessica and Nick, are now in college. Robert and Julie always wanted to adopt and give a child a loving home. They bonded with baby David immediately and have enjoyed the love and energy that a young child brings.  Julie describes David as sweet, happy, funny and loving. She says he enjoys looking at trees and fish, spending time with his big brother Nick and big sister Jessica, watching sports with Robert, and rocking in the rocking chair with Julie. He is strong and active, and began rolling over at 2 1/2 months. When he is an adult, Julie predicts David will be a strong man of God and probably interested in sports and music. "We feel very blessed to have David in our lives," says Julie, "We are all so in love with him and he brings us so much joy."

One adoption in North County will happen in April!  Thanks to this family for walking the long journey and caring for their Angel Baby until they can be a forever family.

The largest training class we have EVER had completed their
training on April 12!
All trainees received a copy of the important book
The Connecte
d Child, which serves as a useful road map for foster and adoptive parents to create the bonding, attachment and security needed for children healing from trauma.  With this class and a number of families still in the certification process, Angels is preparing to ramp up for a lot of placements in the coming months.

Angels would like to recognize the amazing efforts of Sara and Eric of North Santa Barbara County as our  Foster Parents of the Month. We are very grateful for the time you spend as foster parents, and for the love and support you have given your Angels child!

News from Empowered to Connect!
Our South County social worker, Stacey Anderson, attended the annual Empowered to Connect conference via simulcast on April 8th and 9th.
She had some good information to share:

"Last week I attended the Empowered to Connect conference and I was thrilled not only with the incredibly relevant and valuable information provided, but that advocacy for foster children is truly gaining momentum. There are so many valuable things that I learned, or that were reiterated from my previous learning. For example, play
is a key factor in learning. Kids learn how to do things exponentially faster when they learn it through play, as opposed to just telling them what to do. There was also a statement about making parenting mistakes that I thought was so powerful: children benefit MORE from a parent making a mistake and then repairing it than for the parent to never have made the mistake at all. Mistakes are an opportunity for learning and repairing, but if we never make a mistake to begin with, there are no opportunities for that learning and repairing. I was also reminded that punishment is the least effective way to change behavior. Instead, making a genuine connection with the child,  being playful and thoughtful in your interaction with them, and creating an opportunity for learning is far more effective. Lastly, I was reminded that TELLING a child (especially one with trauma) that they are safe/loved/ok/etc. means nothing until they actually FEEL it. It is important to use affection, to demonstrate loving actions, to listen, and to be patient until they genuinely feel safe and loved.

I was so encouraged to see so many Angels families at this training, and continue to be inspired by how eager our families are to educate themselves, to parent effectively, and provide optimal care for our kids. If you weren't able to attend this year, check out the Empowered to Connect website.  There are plenty of resources for you to get a feel for the amazing work they're doing!"
