Welcome...

Families foster with Angels Foster Care of Santa
Barbara in a variety of ways.  Most people know that many Angels families may foster with the hope of adopting one day.  Or that Angels families may focus solely on fostering a child through a difficult time until a permanency decision is made.  Both fostering avenues are always needed and assist Angels tremendously in ensuring we have nurturing and welcoming homes for little ones.

There is another way to foster with Angels, however, that many people are not aware of and which is very helpful in supporting the integrity of the Angels mission: short-term foster care.

Short-term foster care, while by definition is less than 30 days of care, is accomplished in several different ways. It could be helping an Angels family experiencing a family emergency by providing temporary care for their Angels child.  It could be caring for a child for a few days or for weeks while Child Welfare Services completes their evaluation of a suitable relative. It could be giving an Angels family who has been caring for a very sick or fussy child a well-deserved break. It could mean being called because there are no other foster homes available in that moment and there is a child sitting in a car or office waiting for a home to be found.

We have several families that currently provide this vital service and support to our Angels program.  We can't begin to thank them enough for all they do, for filling the gaps, and for being so flexible and responsive.

We need more of them. We need more families in our community to come forward and begin the discussion of how they could possibly foster through Angels.  Becoming a foster family who provides short-term care is not for every family, just as being a fost-adopt home is not what every family aspires to do.  We know this, but if your commitment is to caring for infants and toddlers in crisis, we know we can find a place for you with Angels!

With gratitude,

Jennifer L. Mills, MSW, LCSW

Creating a Healing Environment in the Home & Community:

A special training event for parents, advocates & professionals

Saturday, September 6, 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

Camarillo Community Church, 1322 Las Posas Rd., Camarillo

Do you want to improve your ability to support a child or young person in a constructive way? Would you like to make your home more of a healing and nurturing environment? Today's children and young people - especially those who have experienced the "hard places" of trauma, foster care and adoption - are in need of supportive and healing environments. Learn from child development expert Dr. Karyn Purvis on how to build trust and nurture the developing child. Karyn Purvis, Ph.D. is a developmental psychologist and co-author of The Connected Child: Bring Hope and Healing to Your Adoptive Family. She is the director of the Institute of Child Development at Texas Christian University. Join us as Dr. Purvis explores a relationship-based and holistic approach to building trust and nurturing children based on the neuroscience behind attachment and behavior. Registration fee: $25. This event is open to all.

Register online www.casapacifica.org/training, or call 805-366-4064.

2014 Cottage Hospital NICU reunion

The annual Cottage NICU Reunion is in October of 2014, at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Any parent, including a foster adoptive parent, can contact the NICU at 805-569-7522. Ask for information about the Reunion, including an invitation if this is applicable to the parent. The Parent must sign up the family to attend the Reunion, so that they know how many visitors to plan for this event. Extended family members are welcome to attend at their cost for entrance into the Zoo.
