Welcome...

Foster Parent.  A term or a name we all hear that means different things to each of us. Two words that encapsulate so much, but at the same time it is difficult to completely, fully describe the role and the experience. Interestingly though, the phrase foster parenting does illustrate one of the most challenging dichotomies for Angels' foster parents, to be a young child's parent for an indefinite period of time.

Angels' parents are asked to nurture, educate, cherish, guide, and love a child whose past is often filled with sorrow and pain and whose future path is unknown. Angels' parents are reminded of the uncertainty and vagaries of the future on a frequent basis. Sometimes they are reminded by the dynamics of the child welfare and court systems and sometimes by the actions of the child's parents. Other times, and most importantly, Angels' parents are reminded by the precious child entrusted to them.

However, despite knowing all of this, Angels' parents persevere, not because they have super powers or are automatons, but simply because they are willing to put a child and his or her well-being first. Angels' parents would rather absorb the uncertainty than have their foster child live with it one more minute than they have to. Angels' parents recognize that time is precious, childhood is fleeting and every child needs and deserves stability, love and a sense of belonging. Angels' parents realize they can be part of a solution for a child, whether that means for five days, five months or forever.

Please consider joining Angels as a foster family or supporting the amazing work our families do daily.

Sincerely,

Jennifer L. Mills, MSW, LCSW

2014 Cottage Hospital NICU reunion

The annual Cottage NICU Reunion is in October of 2014, at the Santa Barbara Zoo. Any parent, including a foster adoptive parent, can contact the NICU at 805-569-7522. Ask for information about the Reunion, including an invitation if this is applicable to the parent. The Parent must sign up the family to attend the Reunion, so that they know how many visitors to plan for this event. Extended family members are welcome to attend at their cost for entrance into the Zoo.
