Greetings...
With the New Year, we begin our eighth year serving the most vulnerable children of our community, infants and toddlers who have been neglected and abused. Children who cannot speak for themselves, who cannot ask for help, or tell us what is wrong. Children who are dependent on the adults in their lives to shelter, care and love them.
We are often asked if there truly is a need for homes for young children, if infants and toddlers are really placed into foster care in our community. These questions are often the result of two common misperceptions: 1) That child abuse does not happen here and certainly not with young children; and 2) That the majority children in foster care are school-aged. Recent local statistics disprove these statements. In Santa Barbara County, from October 2012 to September 2013, 109 children ages 5 and under entered foster care, accounting for 55% of all children and youth detained by Child Welfare Services during that same time period. We also know first-hand as we receive urgent calls for homes and as Angels' families open their homes time and time again to little ones in crisis. So, yes, there is a need, a great need, and your help is crucial.
As Marianne Williamson wrote, "In every community, there is work to be done. In every nation, there are wounds to heal. In every heart, there is the power to do it." Please contact us to find out how you can help today.
Respectfully,
Jennifer L. Mills, MSW, LCSW
