April 2013

   Greetings!

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to recognize the ways we can each play a part in promoting the well-being and children and families in our community. In that spirit, we would like to honor the Angels families who have opened their hearts and homes to 128 precious little ones.

While it may seem the majority of what Angels' families do is more along the lines of intervention, caring for children who have already experienced abuse and neglect, prevention is also an integral part of fostering. The most visible and immediate preventive action is a child sheltered by their Angels family, protected from further trauma and neglect. Angels' families provide that tranquil home for a child to feel safe again and get back to the business of being a kid.

 Baby with Hand

Just as important, but not as apparent nor as immediately seen, is how the love and care received from their Angels family can tremendously impact a child's future.  Research shows us that there are protective factors that reduce the risk of abuse and neglect occurring and enhance the future well being and success of children and families. Two of these six factors are the presence of nurturing relationships and strong positive attachments, as well as, the social and emotional competence of children.

Day in and day out, Angels' families are building and strengthening these factors for the children in their care. This rhythm of family is central to the Angels' model; a child experiences consistent and loving care-giving, sees it modeled daily, tries it on, and practices then with family and friends.  Minutes of these experiences become hours, days weeks, and months, all combining to create the foundation for future healthy relationships and self-esteem.

And in the end, prevention simply comes down to:

1280 fingers, held gently, guided in play and protected from danger;

256 ears that have heard soothing words of caring and concern;

256 eyes that have seen happiness and joy in every day moments;

128 minds, which have been filled with encouragement to explore their ideas and world;

128 hearts that have felt the fullness of unconditional love;

And 128 unique little ones, who have been protected, cherished and hopefully inspired to be their lovely selves always.

Family of the Month

Recommendations from Angels Parents

This month, Angels mom Jenna recommends the following article from Lilipoh magazine as a must-read for families with preschool-aged children.

  Lilipoh cover

In the article, author Susan Johnson, M.D., a behavioral and developmental pediatrician, discusses why the current trend to teach preschoolers and kindergarteners to read, write and spell can actually be detrimental to healthy brain development.

An excerpt:

   "Our preschools and kindergartens need to fill their curriculums with play consisting of lots of sensory integration activities that will strengthen fine motor movements, visual motor abilities, balance, muscle tone, proprioception, as well as strengthen children's social and emotional development.

    Activities like imaginary play, climbing, running, jumping, hopping, skipping, walking the balance beam, playing circle games, singing, playing catch, doing meaningful chores, painting, coloring, playing hand-clapping games, doing string games, and finger knitting will strengthen their minds for learning.

    Children need these healthy, harmonious, rhythmic, and noncompetitive movements to develop their brains. For it is the movements of their body that create the pathways in their mind for reading, writing, spelling, mathematics, and creative thinking."

Read the full article for more insight into brain development of the right and left hemispheres, and how this development affects learning and cognition.

The Last Word...

"I believe the best service to the child is the service closest to the child, and children who are victims of neglect, abuse, or abandonment must not also be victims of bureaucracy. They deserve our devoted attention, not our divided attention."
