Greetings!
I was recently at a community event, providing information on Angels, our fostering program and the community need for foster parents. Several interested people came up to speak with me, expressing genuine dismay over the thought of our community's children of any age being in the situations we see and hear of daily. During the course of some of those conversations, a theme arose that we often hear: "I wish I could help... but I don't know how I could do it....It would be so hard to bond with the child and then have them leave." Very honest and real concerns. Concerns we encourage all prospective foster parents to consider and discuss at length prior to starting the certification process with us, in training and really on going as they foster. How foster parents navigate this conundrum is a topic for another column in itself. But it did get me thinking.
Fostering a child and everything that it entails is not something everyone can, wants to, or should do. There are many considerations to examine and the decision is an individual and deeply personal one. However, if fostering is not a fit, there are so many other ways to have a positive impact on a child's life in our community. Below are just a few avenues in which you can support and assist a child:
- Educate yourself on the complex issues facing children and youth in our community and share the information with other concerned citizens. The Children's Scorecard compiled by Kids Network Santa Barbara County is a great place to start. http://www.countyofsb.org/kidsnet/default.htm
- Become a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). CASA of Santa Barbara County is part of a nationwide program of volunteers who are appointed to abused and neglected children in our local Juvenile Court System. The mission of CASA is to assure a safe, permanent, nurturing home for every abused and/or neglected child by providing a highly trained volunteer to advocate for them in the court system. http://www.sbcasa.org
- Volunteer with at-risk children through Santa Barbara County Office of Education's The Center for Community Education. The Center for Community Education administers programs that connect students, families, teachers and schools with resources, programs, services and volunteers from the private sector, nonprofits and social service agencies and the broader community. Their Transitional Youth Services program provides support and assistance to foster and homeless youth. http://www.sbceo.org/~center
- Get involved with a philanthropic group that supports community-based action on behalf of children.
- Attend and participate in community meetings regarding issues of foster care, child safety and well being.
- Donate to the many worthwhile organizations that are positively impacting the lives of children and families in our community in a whole host of ways, from enhancing health and development to providing a home and nurturance to a child.
There truly is something for everyone. Just take that first step!
Best wishes,
Jennifer

Program Highlight
UNITED WAY: United for Literacy
Since 1923, United Way of Santa Barbara County has worked closely in partnership with schools and programs in our community to improve educational success. A United Way strategy is to increase the number of graduating students reading at or above grade level. This countywide effort is led by the United Ways of Santa Barbara County. UFL is a multi-stage strategy utilizing proven effective programs - bornlearning, Imagination Library and Reading Plus - to work toward the 10 year goal of improving the on-time graduation rates and increasing the number of students reading at grade level in every grade.
IMAGINATION LIBRARY
It sounds almost too simple to be true, but by reading regularly with your children during their early childhood years, you are giving them a big boost toward a successful education! Dolly Parton's Imagination Library will help you read with your child. Every child will receive books of their own, at no cost, thanks to United Way of Santa Barbara County and Dolly Parton. Each month a new, carefully selected book will be mailed in your child's name to your home. He/she can look forward to new and exciting adventures from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library until he/she turns five years old as long as you remain a resident of Santa Barbara County. For more information or to register your child, go to this link.

Angels Spotlight:
Margot Clarke
Angels is fortunate to have Margot Clarke as our Volunteer Coordinator. Margot is a former Angels foster parent and mother of five girls. Margot and her family have attended and staffed an informational booth or table at almost all of Angels' outreach events in the last few years, and she manages our volunteer force. Thank you Margot (and husband Keith) for tirelessly working to support our organization over the years!

A few questions...
Tell us a little bit about your family:
I have been married for 33 years to Keith, a Geography Professor at UCSB. We have five daughters ranging in age from 32 to our Angels daughter, who is 6. We also have a one and a half year old grandson! All our adult daughters and their husbands live on the East Coast, but we get together many times throughout the year.
What motivated you to become a foster parent with Angels?
After our youngest daughter went off to college, we both had empty nest syndrome and a year sabbatical abroad to think things over. After research, we decided that local foster care would be the best way to add to our family. We went online and found Angels Foster Care of Santa Barbara. We were very impressed and realized that their goals aligned with ours. Angels came through again and again with support at every stage of our journey to eventual adoption.
What is your idea of happiness?
That's easy! -- Being with friends and family. Also, there is nothing like a good day lived, a fine meal eaten and a peaceful night's sleep.
What is your favorite Angels event, and why?
We all love "Boo at the Zoo." The costumes are wonderful, and there are so many treats!
What will you wear for Halloween this year?
My six year old will be at least three things for Halloween. A good witch, an Indian Princess, and Mulan. I am always Cleopatra, and my husband is usually dressed as he came home from work in his academic costume --Khakis and and a blue shirt.
