Board Legislative Committee to Discuss Proposed PDE Graduation Requirements

Currently, the state requires Pennsylvania high school students to pass a series of exams called Keystone Exams in order to receive a high school diploma. For years, the T/E School District has opposed the use of these exams for the reasons listed below.
  • The use of Keystone Exams as a graduation requirement overemphasizes performance on a single set of tests;
  • The cycle of remediation, retesting and project-based assessments limits the ability for students to maximize their academic choices in high school;
  • The project-based assessment currently offered as an alternative to the Keystone Exams is time and labor intensive to administer; and
  • The Tredyffrin/Easttown School District already provides meaningful academic instruction and assessment that engages students as critical and creative thinkers and successfully prepares these students for college and careers.
In January 2016, the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) convened a task force to study the effectiveness of the current requirements of Keystone Exams as a graduation requirement. Following six months of study, PDE released a report regarding high school graduation requirements to the General Assembly. PDE is recommending modifications to graduation requirements including:
  • Modifying the performance level calculation methodology for Keystone Exams to satisfy the graduation requirement;
  • Allowing the option for alternate standardized tests such as the SAT;
  • Providing an alternate graduation pathway for students who attend technical schools; and
  • Allowing schools to use courses, grades and evidence related to postsecondary plans to demonstrate the needed proficiency benchmark.
These modified graduation requirements cannot go into effect without action by the Pennsylvania General Assembly. The T/E School Board Legislative Committee will hold a meeting on September 12, 2016 at 7:00 pm in the Tredyffrin/Easttown Administration Offices, 940 West Valley Road, Suite 1700, Wayne, to review PDE's proposed graduation requirements in detail and to recommend action to support the best interests of our students.

2015-2016 District Goal Completion Report

District Level Goals are carefully considered and established each year. The process of establishing Goals in itself serves as a planning and communication device for the Board and administration. It ensures everyone is familiar with the direction being set and has participated in setting that direction for the benefit of our students. Finally, a statement of Goals enables the Board and staff to look back at the end of the year to see if the plans have indeed been accomplished. Depending on an evaluation of the outcomes, it may be appropriate to either revisit a particular Goal or to move on to new areas of priority.

The 2015-2016 Goal Completion Report outlines goals and objectives completed last school year.
