March 4, 2016 Letter to T/E Families Regarding the Chester County DA Press Conference on Police Investigation

Dear T/E Families,

As reported in the news a few weeks ago, Chester County law enforcement officers have been conducting an investigation into allegations that some Conestoga High School football players engaged in hazing activities. Today the Chester County District Attorney released further information about the outcome of the police inquiry. The high school is now permitted to conduct its own investigation, and I would like to take this opportunity to review directly with our community some of the next steps the school will undertake.

We feel strongly that all athletes must be able to participate in team activities in an environment free from hazing. District policies and school rules have been in place to reinforce tolerance and respect. Each season, our Athletic Director emphasizes the expectations for conduct, including no tolerance for hazing, by meeting with all coaches and all teams. Traditionally our athletes have demonstrated high standards of sportsmanship and conduct on and off the field.

In light of the information shared by the police about the football program, we will conduct a thorough school-based investigation. The process will be designed to determine whether or not code of conduct violations occurred, the awareness and level of supervision provided by the coaching staff, and what further measures can promote inclusive and respectful behavior. It is always wise to consider fresh ideas to confront serious challenges. We will begin on Monday with enhanced communications as the spring sports season opens and will have additional measures in place for the start of next year's football season.

This investigation is a top priority for the high school. The Athletic Director has already begun communicating with affected team members and families. The Head Football Coach has been suspended from all coaching responsibilities, pending the outcome of the school investigation.

As with all disciplinary matters, we work directly with students and their parents and apply firm but fair consequences if such action is warranted. Student disciplinary outcomes will remain private, and we will offer support to any student experiencing undue stress related to this event. Counselors are ready as always to assist all students.

I thank the school community for its continued patience and cooperation. The high school administration will conduct an investigation that is thorough, fair, timely, and as discreet as possible. Together we remain steadfast in our commitment to a positive climate in all school programs. If you have any information you believe will assist with the school's investigation, please inform a high school administrator at (610) 240-1000.

Sincerely,
Dr. Richard Gusick
Superintendent of Schools
