Information and Resources Regarding October 13, 2015 Death of Local Teenager
This morning we became aware of the death of an individual who was not currently attending T/ESD schools. The Tredyffrin Township Police Department released the following statement:

"On Tuesday, October 13th, 2015 at 7:44 AM, The Tredyffrin Township Police Department responded to a deceased male lying in the roadway on Valley Forge Rd., approx. 50 yards south of Swedesford Rd. This is within the Devon section of the Township. The unnamed juvenile victim, 17 years of age, of Devon, was discovered by a passerby at the location which is at the base of a non-operational railway trestle (bridge) that now supports the Chester Valley Trail system. Multiple witnesses indicated that this juvenile male (alone) jumped from the bridge falling to the roadway. Tredyffrin Township Police Department worked the scene along with emergency responders from Berwyn Fire Company's Ambulance and Medic units and the Chester County Coroner's Office.

The event was witnessed.

Information on the identity of the victim is being withheld pending family notification. Official cause and manner of death will be set by the Coroner.

No further information is available."

A young person's death is always tragic and a sudden loss can have profound effects on students. It is important that we, as a community, recognize the loss and offer help. The District has counselors available for all of our students who need support.

Your child may be affected in some way by this death, even if your child did not know the individual. Discussing thoughts and feelings about death is important in supporting your child. Sudden death is always painful to understand, and your adolescent may experience signs of stress. These may include:
  • changes in mood, sleeping, and eating patterns
  • difficulty concentrating
  • isolation
  • withdrawal from normal routines
  • anxiety
  • statements and thoughts about death and dying.
Attached is a link for tips and resources regarding death and grief from the National Association of School Psychologists.

After reviewing the information in the link please contact your child's counselor if you feel that your child needs assistance.

Sincerely,
Richard Gusick
Superintendent of Schools
