Flu Shot

Flu Shots

Flu season is almost upon us! If it suits you medically, please consider getting a flu shot to keep you and those around you healthy! Usually, your corner drug store can do that for you.

Some days, I wonder what people did before email. On a typical day, I get about 75 emails of various sorts. Some of it is junk and some of it is critically important to my job or to a particular family. This is just one aspect of living in the information age. We get so much information directed at us, we need to constantly filter and sort a huge amount of data. Of all the people who have written, discussed, commented, lamented and celebrated the information age, I like how Mark Milliron, educational reformer and technologist, captured it. His "email serenity prayer:"

"God grant me the Serenity to accept the emails I cannot get to,

The Time to answer the ones I should, and

The Wisdom to know the difference."

Good luck with that!

ANNUAL SPAGHETTI DINNER
& SILENT AUCTION

Cyber Village Academy 8th graders will once again be putting on their annual SPAGHETTI DINNER and SILENT AUCTION to help cover the cost for Eagle Bluff! (The annual 8th grade end of the year field trip) The date and time for this year's event is Thursday, November 13th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm. Please mark this date down on your calendar as this is an event for the entire CVA Community and feel free to bring family and friends. As in the past, we will offer gluten free and vegetarian options as well as traditional Meat Sauce.

The cost is $5 per person or $20 for a family of 4 or more; checks payable to CVA. To purchase tickets you can either buy at the door or starting Monday you can buy tickets from Melissa in her office (This method is preferred so we can plan for the correct amount of food and have limited waste).

Spaghetti Sauce

Uncooked Spaghetti noodles

Uncooked gluten free spaghetti noodles

Precooked Meatballs

Parmesan Cheese

Cookies, Cakes, and other Goodies

Silent Auction Items (If you need a donation request letter contact Mrs. Cassie) We have already received some items for our auction and an updated list will come out soon. Give to the Max Day and Spaghetti Dinner/Silent Auction!

Give to the Max Day is November 13! So is the Spaghetti Dinner/Silent Auction.

Once again, CVA will be participating in Give to the Max Day. Last year, we brought in nearly$4,000 in one day! That money helped fund our recent technology purchases and many books for our high school English classes. This year, the Spaghetti Dinner/Silent Auction is on the same day. Last year, that event brought in almost $3,000 for the eighth grade Eagle Bluff trip. Please start saving and plan to help us out!

We promise the money will be used to support the CVA mission!

8th Grade ACT Explore  &

10th Grade Plan Testing

Early in their academic careers, students should set goals for what they want to do after high school to prepare effectively for the future. Students must be aware of what they need to know and be able to do to be ready for college. To encourage students to take rigorous high school courses and share information with students that helps them understand the progress they are making toward established goals, the state legislature and the Minnesota Department of Education have mandated that all 8th graders and all 10th graders take ACT's College

and Career Readiness tests.

This is now a part of the Minnesota high school graduation requirements. It is very important that all CVA 8th and 10th students take these tests.

On November 5th all 8th grade students will take the ACT Explore test from 12:30-3:30 pm.

On November 6th all 10th grade students will take the ACT Plan test from 8:30-12:00.

Both tests have a career interest inventory component as well as an academic testing component. PASCAL students should plan to come in to the building to take their test at the assigned time.

Students will each receive a score report that can help them answer three questions:

* How am I doing so far?

* What are my plans and goals for after high school?

* Am I on track for college?

For additional information about the ACT Explore and Plan tests, you can visit the test website at http://www.act.org/explorestudent/index.html

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

FERPA is a federal law that ensures all families have certain rights related to the private student data that schools maintain. It also describes the responsibilities of schools to maintain private student data and the data that schools can release without written parental permission.

For more information, see this linked document.

College Choice Workshop!

On November 19th from 3:30-5:30, Jay Benanav will be coming to CVA to give a College workshop. Jay will be going over things like finding the right school for your child with a focus on price. College tuition continues to go up so it is imperative that parents and students pick the right college that both fits what they want out of college and fits their budget. This workshop will help with that.

There is no cost for the workshop, all parents need to do is show up to CVA's library at 3:30 on Wednesday November 19th.

If you have any questions please contact Jay Benanav at [email protected].

Project Citizen Achievement!

Project Citizen Wins an Exceptional Rating at the National Showcase!

Congratulations to Amari Gamble, Sofia Itskovich, Kendall Trimble, and Quinn Trimble who won a 2nd place ranking at the National Showcase for Project Citizen!

This is an incredible achievement for this team and Cyber Village Academy. Their project focused on a public policy initiative to label GMOs. The team did intense research in their 6th grade social studies class and won the grand prize at the state competition in May 2014. This achievement resulted in progressing to the National Showcase in July 2014.

Project Citizen is a civics/government curriculum that promotes competent and responsible participation in government. It is an interactive project-based learning model and emphasizes collaborative work, research and analysis, and engages students in learning how to monitor and influence public policy.
