Our Mission
Cyber Village Academy prepares students to meet the challenge of a rapidly changing world with confidence by helping them to become

inquiring, knowledgeable, caring and active citizens who value academic rigor, integrity, self reliance and compassion.

,

Schools are never dull places; there are always many, many things happening! October is the month when we close the books on last year. At the board meeting this week, our auditor's reports and our charter school annual report covering the 2012-2013 fiscal year were all presented and accepted by the board. These documents are now available on the CVA website onthe Board page. Together, they paint a comprehensive picture of the financial and academic health of the school - and we're in good shape! Our 12.5 percent fund balance is the highest it has been in more than 8 years and enrollments have increased for the past 7 years.

With all those reports done, the office-work part of my job turns to the accreditation process. Representatives from AdvancEd. the largest accreditation agency in the country, will visit our school on April 28 and 29 to review 33 different indicators of school operations and success. Our job between now and then is to collect evidence and artifacts that explain what we do and how that fits with those 33 indicators. The process will include gathering information and perspectives from many of the school's stakeholders. Stay tuned for more information - and maybe some calls for assistance - as our work progresses!

Annual Spaghetti Dinner
& Silent Auction

Cyber Village Academy's 8th graders will once again be putting on their annual SPAGHETTI DINNER and SILENT AUCTION here at CVA to help cover the cost for Eagle Bluff! (The annual 8th grade end of the year field trip) The date and time for this year's event is:

Thursday, Nov 7th from 6:00pm - 8:00pm!

Please mark this date down on your calendar as this is an event for the entire CVA Community.  And, feel free to bring family and friends too!  As in the past, we will offer gluten free and vegetarian options as well as traditional meat sauce.

The cost is $5 per person or $20 for a family of 4 or more; checks payable to CVA. To purchase tickets, you can either buy at the door or starting Monday you can buy tickets from Noelle or Melissa in the office (This method is preferred so we can plan for the correct amount of food and have limited waste).

We are looking for donations from the following list (We usually have around 150-200 people):

 Spaghetti Sauce

 Uncooked Spaghetti noodles

 Uncooked gluten free spaghetti noodles

 Precooked Meatballs

 Parmesan Cheese

 Cookies, Cakes, and other Goodies

 Lemonade

 Coffee

 Paper Plates and Cups

 Plastic Forks and Knives

 Napkins

Silent Auction Items (If you need a donation request letter contact Ms. Cassie)

We are also looking for parent volunteers to help donate cooked noodles.  8th grade parents should sign up for a supervision role and everyone can sign up for stuff to donate at the Parent Group Website.

If you have any questions please contact Ms. Cassie, Mrs. Koenen, or Mrs. Mann.

Give to the Max Day!

Give to the Max Day is a statewide fundraising event involving hundreds of non-profit organizations, and CVA is one of them! We're going to be trying to raise $15,000 for school technology. The big day is November 14! Please use the time between now and then to save some money for us and to ask all your friends and relatives to support us. There will be more information closer to the date, but it's not too early to start thinking about it! Thanks in advance for your generosity!

If you are interested in getting more involved to raise money for CVA on Give to the Max Day - please email Noelle.

New Board Member

CVA is pleased to welcome Andrea McCormack to our school board! Andrea is a long-time St. Paul resident with a background in arts, theater, design, creativity and teachers' aide. We're excited to have her and her fresh perspectives on the CVA team!

Flu Shots

As we all know, schools are petri dishes for germs and viruses!  CVA recommends two major preventative measures: frequent use of hand sanitizer and, if medically appropriate, a flu shot. Now's the time to plan to stay healthy this winter!

Minor Calendar Change

Wednesday, November 27th was scheduled to be an online day. It is now a non-school day. Thanksgiving break starts a day earlier than originally planned! Enjoy!

Dress for the Weather

CVA has outdoor recess all winter except when the temperature (including wind chill) reaches zero degrees or below. Please be sure your students come prepared for outdoor play with hats, gloves, warm jackets and, when the snow arrives, boots.

Lost & Found

With all the extra clothes of the season, our collection of lost & found increases dramatically. Please be sure to put your student(s)' name(s) in all clothing - particularly outerwear. We can then help return items to their owners. Failing that, at the end of each quarter, we make a donation of unclaimed items to Goodwill or other charitable organization.

Science Fair is Coming!

The Science fair is on Tuesday, November 12th! Students should expect to stay until 4 p.m. that day. We are currently looking for Science Fair Judges. No experience necessary! Please contact Mrs. Mann if you are interested in being a Science Fair judge between 12 - 3 p.m.

Eco Club -- Sign up Today!

Eco Club is open to grades 3 through 12... please join us!

What can you do in Eco Club?  Eco Club will consist of an EcoCats' Core Group attending monthly meetings with a 20 student capacity, so sign up now to be included!  This core group will have fun learning about the environment within and around them, discovering ways to live eco-friendly and environmentally healthy, and expand their own eco interests. They'll make various Eco Crafts during the meetings, help design an EcoCats Online Newsletter for CVA families, and advocate green living awareness by helping "green" our school, including planning Eco fundraisers, events and activities for CVA.  Hopefully the EcoCats' Core Group will expand with Parent Volunteers, and next year include an online eco curriculum which could allow CVA students at large to also be "honorary" EcoCats!

To join & sign up, first send an email to Michelle with the words ECOCAT in the subject line, along with student's name who wishes to join, and the grade they are in.  Parents, after you email Michelle please also fill out the permission slip, and return to Noelle in the office by Monday, October 28th.

Eco Club's first meeting will be next Wednesday October 30th from 3:30-4:30pm.  Parent pick up is from 4:35-4:45pm at CVA's main entrance.  The Eco Club's meeting room will be Ms. Christy's room, unless otherwise noted.  Students may bring water bottles (snacks postponed until we discuss/agree as a group).  Students will discuss interests and preferences during our first meeting. Hope to see you there!

Library Update

We are currently processing book donations and updating our library protocols. There has been no dedicated library parent volunteer at CVA for over a year now, but this year we are back on track.  With help from the Parent Group, we are getting the library ready so that parent volunteers will be able to come in for short, manageable, volunteering hours AND to make the library more accessible to our kids.

Keep an eye out for more announcements!

In the mean time:

  • Encourage your kids to check out the CVA Library-and to let us know what they think is missing!  (there is now a book request form in the black CVA library checkout binder)

  • Help us by responding to the book donation calls we put up here.  Currently we are looking to fill out our Garth Nix Seven Towers series.  Do you have any books in this series to donate?  Garth Nix is a best-selling fantasy author known for his high quality writing.
"This is the perfect kids' introduction to Garth Nix.... The Seventh Tower has a refreshing new portrayal of characters that is not typically seen in books for this age group."

Scholastic Book Orders

October book orders are due on Wednesday, October 30th

Handbell Fundraiser

Handbell groups are up and running now with over 25 students involved in 3 different groups.  One of our goals for this year is to take the 'show' on the road as a service to our communities.  In order to do this, we need to buy some specific foldable tables that we can transport.  We need 4 tables at a total cost of $250.  To raise money we are currently selling poinsettias through Malmborg's Nursery.  If you would like to order a poinsettia or give a donation toward the tables, please email Lauren Odle.  We will be turning in our order November 15th and the poinsettias will be delivered on December 4thClick here to see prices, color and sizes options.

Yours for the kids,
