| Greetings!
Education Week is a national weekly newspaper about the politics, finances and issues in education. It's a unique publication in that it's not about teaching techniques or school management practices; it's about the big national and state issues. Two weeks ago a particular article entitled "A Muzzled Generation" caught my eye. Written by the director of the Student Press Law Center, it discusses the importance of modeling and applying free speech concepts to students and student-run newspapers. The article argues that controversial viewpoints should not be silenced, but rather highlighted, discussed, and turned into teachable moments for everyone.
CVA's staff handbook addresses this issue from the instructional perspective, stating in part, "CVA understands that controversial topics, by their very nature, raise challenging issues about which people can disagree strongly and with great conviction. Students should be encouraged to express their viewpoints, support them with academic arguments, and listen respectfully to other viewpoints with a genuine effort to understand the alternate perspectives." It is my own deeply held conviction that it is through such great debates and discussions that true education, personal growth and even historical change occurs. But of course, you're free to disagree with that!
Best of luck to all for History Day next week!

Come Join Us for History Day
Come help the Level 2, 3, and 3+ students celebrate History Day on Tuesday, February 26 from 2:45-4:00. Exhibits will be in the gym, Websites and a Documentary will be in the science room and math room, and Performances will be in the music room. Most Student Council students will sell snacks in the entryway to the gym. Street parking may be your best bet. Please be careful if you enter the parking lot because Talmud Torah dismisses students at 3:15.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to parents and former CVA students who have volunteered to be judges this year.
See you at the fair! |

Re-Enrollment Time
For families whose children will be returning to CVA next year, our reenrollment window is now open. Current families have preference for next year's placement, and siblings have priority over new families.
Enrollment will be open to the public via lottery on March 1st for any spots still unfilled by current CVA families. Enrollment forms have been placed in student mailboxes, or you can download and print the form by clicking here.
Enrollment forms should be returned to Melissa in the front office. We look forward to working with your family again in the coming school year! |
March Lunches
Lunch orders for March are due in the office by February 25th. For a copy of the form, click here. All Monday and Tuesday hot lunches must be pre-ordered and pre-paid! Please do not send money with your child in the morning to purchase a lunch for that same day.
Pizza Wednesdays will continue offering cheese and pepperoni pizza for $3 per slice or 2 slices for $5. However, students are requested to pay in advance into a lunch account using the attached order form rather than bringing cash each week.
Milk is also available daily at a cost of $0.05 to students. Students can sign up for milk in advance, or purchase it daily. |

Treats Needed for
History Day Judges
Each year, one of the ways we show our appreciation for History Day judges is to give them treats! Baked goods, dips and chips or crackers, fruits and veggies, or anything else you can think of would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Melissa if you are able to bring treats by Tuesday, February 26 at 2:00 pm.

Bridging Collection
Imagine...how would you cook a meal with basic kitchen utensils? There are thousands of local families and individuals who face this difficult situation every day. Help today and support the Sol Walker CVA Kitchen Pack Collection for Bridging, a local non-profit organization. For information about Bridging, click here.
Sol W. will be collecting new and gently used kitchen items (can openers, mixing spoons, spatulas, dish towels/cloths, ladles, whisks, peelers, etc.) as well as money donations, which he will use to purchase additional kitchen items. Sol will then assemble the utensils into packs and deliver them to Bridging. Checks can be made out to his mom, Sarah Binkley. Donations will be accepted in Christy's classroom Monday, February 25th through Wednesday, March 6th. |
