Greetings!

At the risk of repeating myself, the CVA Board of Directors is weighing the pros and cons of the IB program currently in place for grades 6-8 of the Fusion program. CVA recognizes that the IB program here deserves some significant effort and improvement if it is to continue and also wonders if the same goals can be achieved without carrying the official IB label, thereby saving some time and money. Ultimately, the school needs to decide whether the IB program should be maintained, expanded to include additional grades, or disbanded.

The Board is very interested in parent input to help inform this decision. How important are the different aspects of the IB program to you, and how important is the IB brand? To answer these questions, please complete the survey by clicking here by Monday, February 4. It shouldn't take you more than 5-10 minutes. Thanks to all of you who have already completed the survey!

We will carefully review the results and include them in our decision-making process. The Board anticipates making a decision at its February 26 meeting.

Volunteer Judges Still Needed

for History Day

CVA History Day is February 26 this year from 2:45-4:00 PM in the gym for parents and family friends. We are looking for
judges who will work in teams to judge approximately 5 projects per team. Thanks to the 10 people who have volunteered already, we need several more.

Judges will meet in Mrs. Koenen's classroom at 2:00. She will provide judging sheets and walk through the judging process with the judges prior to the start of the event at 3:00. Judges should be prepared to enjoy the students' presentations!

Judges will then meet with Mrs. Koenen after the end of the fair at 4:00 in her classroom to discuss findings as a group. These findings are critical to determine which students will go on to regionals.

If you are interested in volunteering to be a History Day Judge, please contact Mrs. Koenen.

Re-Enrollment Time

For families whose children will be returning to CVA next year, our reenrollment window is now open.  Current families have preference for next year's placement, and siblings have priority over new families.

Enrollment will be open to the public via lottery on March 1st for any spots still unfilled by current CVA families. Enrollment forms have been placed in student mailboxes, or you can download and print the form by clicking here

Enrollment forms should be returned to Melissa in the front office.  We look forward to working with your family again in the coming school year!

MYP @ CVA

We received an information sheet last Friday that provides a brief overview of key findings of recent research conducted or commissioned by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Research Department from 2008-2011. Although a great deal of the research describes outcomes of students in the IB Diploma Program (DP) in grades 11 and 12, some research was conducted in schools that have Primary Years Programs (PYP) or Middle Years Programs (MYP). Cyber Village Academy has been authorized by IB to offer the Middle Years Program as its curriculum for grades 6, 7, and 8.

Findings noted on the information sheet, "Key Findings from Research on the Impact of IB Programmes" pertaining to MYP include the following:

  •  "Favourable instructional practices and student behaviours were observed more frequently in Texas IB classrooms."

  •  "A higher percentage of students in MYP schools achieved a proficient or advanced performance level on mathematics and science assessments than counter parts in comparison schools. "
  •   "As a whole, PYP and MYP students outperformed peers on the International Schools Assessment (ISA) in reading, math and writing in a majority of grades." The ISA is an internationally standardized assessment. This study sample included 23,575 IB students and 14, 317 non-IB students across Asia, Oceania, Europe, Africa, and the Americas.

For more information about MYP and IB programs, go to http://www.ibo.org or contact Cherie Neima.

Pennies for Patients

Over the next few weeks, your child will have the opportunity to learn first-hand, the powerful feeling that comes from helping others. Pennies for Patients is a service learning program in which kids collect spare change to help people with blood cancer.

Funds are collected from friends and family in honor of local student survivors and current patients.

Monday, February 4 will be the first day to bring in donations (to Robyn's room).  Our goal by Friday, Feb 22 is to reach $450.  If the students achieve/surpass this goal, the teachers will dress up as a "food item" for a day.  To learn more about the LLS or Pennies for Patients, please click here

Welcome to Bryan Schnettler

We're very excited to have our new PE/Health Teacher, Mr. Bryan Schnettler, on board at CVA! Bryan comes with broad experience in various aspects of physical education and enthusiasm for our program. It is clear that the kids are already responding to him well! Mr. Orr left for a very exciting opportunity managing the Irish Dome in Rosemount.  We will miss him and wish him the best of luck in his new adventure!

Testing Season Is On Its Way

It's February, so that means Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) can't be too far away! The MCA testing will be done in March in the two weeks prior to spring break. These tests are important for both students and the school. They provide students with a way to show how much they've learned, and they provide the school with important information about how it can continue to improve its program. We'll have plenty of testing tips once we get a little closer. For now, keep your students reading, writing, and practicing their math & science!

Energy Tip of the Week

brought to you by the CVA Student Council/Eco Team

Change your thermostat settings. In the winter, set your thermostat at 60° F when you are sleeping or gone. Set the thermostat to 68° F when you are at home. This can save 10 percent or more on your heating bills every winter.

Book Orders

Scholastic Book Orders will be in student mailboxes next week.  Order forms and checks made out to Scholastic are due to Melissa by Wednesday, February 27.

Yours for the kids, CVA - International Baccalaureate World School
