Greetings!

Maybe I speak for all "old people" when I say I'm often amazed at the high metabolisms and apparent lack of sensitivity to the cold that our kids so often demonstrate! Brrrrr! Don't they know it's winter!!?? This being Minnesota in January, a couple simple reminders seem to be in order:

1)      Recess is outside unless wind chills are below zero degrees Fahrenheit. (Our new website has a handy dandy weather corner on the home page if you need it.)

2)      Students should have a hat, gloves or mittens, a warm jacket and boots every day. Boots are critical if the students are going to participate in recess activities on the field.

3)      The extra clothes of the season make the lockers a bit fuller. Please encourage your students to keep their lockers neat and clear of unused items so their boots and coats can fit. We're trying to do the same from this end, but we're still seeing lots of clothes and books scattered in the hallways. Thanks for your help!

4)      And of course, drive safely and give yourself plenty of extra time so you don't feel rushed!

Hang in there! The days are already getting longer!

Parent Volunteers Needed

On January 12, both Minneapolis and St. Paul are having their school choice fairs for charter and non-public schools. We need parent volunteers to help out either place for any amount of time between 9 am and 2 pm. Of course, students are welcome too.  What a great opportunity for a Community and Service activity!  Please contact Dave if you're interested in this. Thanks!

Open House

CVA will be having an Open House on Tuesday, January 8, from 6:30-8:00 pm! We welcome all families interested in enrolling this year or next, particularly in the early grades and high school. Please encourage all your neighbors and friends to come and check us out!

Lost and Found

We have a very large number of sweatshirts, water bottles, lunch boxes, shoes and other assorted items in our lost & found box near the kitchen. If your closets at home seem a little empty, you might find your children's missing items in there.

Fort Snelling Huck Finn Summer Camp

Registration is now open for the Minnesota Historical Society's summer camps. Students can explore hands-on history through fun activities at Historic Fort Snelling, the Alexander Ramsey House, the Minnesota State Capitol, Mill City Museum, and Historic Forestville and others. Sign up early. These popular camps fill up fast!

Student Pickup

on Thursdays and Fridays

In an attempt to improve student safety, families will be required to come in to the building and sign out their students from the study center or other student activities on Thursdays and Fridays. Students will remain in the study center or classroom under the supervision of school staff until their parent or ride arrives. The front office will call the study center or classroom to let them know which student can come down to meet their ride.

Recycle Your Holidays™

brought to you by the CVA Student Council/ECO Club

Don't know what to do with those old or no longer-working strings of holiday lights? Making the switch to energy efficient LED holiday lights? Either way, recycle the old lights with us!

Recycle Your Holidays™ is a one-of-a-kind statewide holiday light recycling program in Minnesota created and managed by the Recycling Association of Minnesota (RAM). Drop off unwanted light strings at any of our 450+ participating locations during the holiday season starting November 15 through the end of January each year.

CLICK HERE to view and access the online map of the 2012-2013 Recycle Your Holidays drop off locations. There are also two locations that offer YEAR ROUND recycling drop-offs in Saint Paul.

Energy Saving Tip of the Week

brought to you by the CVA Student Council/Eco Team

Use a humidifier. Humidity makes you feel warmer in colder months. With the proper humidity level, you'll be able to turn your thermostat down to a lower temperature, save energy and still feel comfortable. About 20 percent to 40 percent relative humidity is recommended.

MYP @ CVA

The week before Winter Break, CVA recognized ten students with prestigious awards that are given out each trimester. These are the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile Awards. The ten students who were identified by CVA teachers to receive the Learner Profile awards for First Trimester are:

Isaiah M., Inquirer - develops curiosity, has the skills to learn independently and loves learning.

Yoni G., Knowledgeable - understands many concepts that are important.

Anna M., Thinker - uses thinking skills to solve many kinds of problems reasonably.

Jamin M., Communicator - works well with others and communicates ideas clearly in more than one language.

Grace Z., Principled - honest and responsible for oneself.

Aniq A., Open-minded - open to other cultures, ideas and multiple points of view.

Miguel A., Risk-taker - approaches unfamiliar situations and is strong in his/her beliefs.

Sovigne G., Balanced - understands the importance of brain power and of physical and emotional health.

Mary S., Caring - respects and understands others and strives to make a positive influence on the world.

Kody H., Reflective - looks back on what s/he did and learns from it.

Congratulations to all! Students, be on the look-out for others who demonstrate these attributes and think about how you can strengthen them in your own life through your actions.
