Greetings!

Another week, another great field trip! Over 40 students went to the ice rink in Roseville on Thursday and spent the day skating and eating chili. I've already heard great stories about how high school students played with and helped younger kids, how some kids tried skating for the first time and loved it, and how well everyone cooperated with the chaperones. It's wonderful we can do special events like that!

Have a good weekend everybody!

Strep Throat

This is a note to let you know that we have been exposed to strep throat.

Please read information concerning strep throat and the symptoms your child might experience if sick with strep throat by clicking here.

January Lunch Orders

Lunch orders for January are due in the office by December 17th.  Forms will be in your student's mailbox next week. Click here for a copy of the form.  All Monday and Tuesday hot lunches must be pre-ordered and pre-paid! Please do not send money with your child in the morning to purchase a lunch for that same day.

Pizza Wednesdays will continue offering cheese and pepperoni pizza for $3 per slice or 2 slices for $5. However, students are requested to pay in advance into a lunch account using the attached order form rather than bring cash each week.

Milk is also available daily at a cost of $0.05 to students. Students can sign up for milk in advance, or purchase it daily.

Spelling Bee!

Cyber Village Academy will be participating in the E.W. Scripps Spelling Bee. The  purpose of the bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.

A list of grade level study words is available online here. You should study the words for your grade level.

Written classroom bees will be held the week of Monday, December 17.  The top spellers from each grade level bee will advance to the school-wide bee on Tuesday, January 15, 2013. Our school-wide champion then takes an online exam to qualify for the Regional Bee held on March 2, 2013 at Augsburg College.

Winners of each local region qualify for participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C. !

If you have any questions regarding the Cyber Village Academy spelling bee, please contact Michael Schumacher or Christy Buxman. General information about the Scripps National Bee can be found online at SpellingBee.com.

Good luck!

National History Day Memo

National History Day will kick off this week at Cyber Village Academy - Hip Hip Hooray for History Day!  Students at CVA in level 2-3+ will be participating. Its primary purpose is to get students excited about all types of history while developing research, critical thinking, and presentation skills. For Cyber Village Academy an additional goal is for students to recognize that history is part of everyday life, not just something found in a textbook. Students are able to achieve remarkable academic growth through their research and creative projects.

This week the Minnesota Historical Society and the Minnesota Public Library mentors will be visiting our classroom. Students are encouraged to bring in their own device to use for researching on Wednesday, December 12th.

The Great Minnesota

Pet Food Drive Is On!

Help CVA's Student Council support The Twin Cities Dog Daycare Association in their Holiday Pet Food Drive this year through December 15th.

Donate to help dogs in need by contributing food, supplies, or monetary donations.

All donations will be collected for local charities such as The Pet Project, an organization that helps families avoid surrendering beloved pets by providing pet food. Donations will also go to various local shelters and rescue organizations.

Bring all donations to Amanda's classroom by Friday, December 14.

Last week I shared some study tips from the article, "A Toolkit for School Success:  15 Study Tips for Students with ADHD" by Margarita Tartakovsky, M.S.  Last week I shared planner tips. This week I will share study tips.

3.   Study in increments.  Cramming the night before a test isn't just stressful; it's ineffective.  Tartakovsky quotes Laurie Dietzel, Ph.D., "Our brains aren't meant to absorb and retain information reviewed at the last minute. Repetition is key to learning and last-minute stress can lead to anxiety that blocks our ability to readily understand and recall information."   Dietzel suggests starting a week ahead and studying in 15-20 minute increments.

4.  Use whatever study tools work best.  Consider what kinds of tools help you study effectively. Maybe you learn best by using flash cards, copying notes, or talking with others about the material.  Pacing or walking around might help you focus.  According to Dietzel, "Movement can stimulate some of the frontal lobe regions and attention control."  Try a few approaches maybe one or two will work for you.

Donations Please!

As cold season is in full swing, we are running low on our supply of tissues for the classrooms. If you are interested and able, we'd appreciate donations. Thank you!

Energy Saving Tip of the Week

brought to you by the CVA Student Council/Eco Team

Don't peek in the oven. Resist the urge to open the oven door while baking. Every time you peek, the temperature drops 25° F and requires additional energy to bring the temperature back up.
