Greetings!

The survey says...

Many thanks to the 59 families of 73 students who responded to the parent survey! We very much appreciate all the feedback. Here are a few highlights:

  • On the 10 items of the Teacher-Family Compact, you gave us 4 A's, 3 A-minuses, and 3 B-pluses for an overall GPA of A-.
  • 100 percent of those responding agreed or strongly agreed that CVA provides a positive school climate (although 4 marked N/A or unsure).
  • 44 out of 45 agree or strongly agree that CVA provides a high quality education (with 6 unsure).
  • 90 percent report overall satisfaction with the educational experience at CVA.

We also learned a few things that we need to work on. You've confirmed that our transportation practices need work, that teacher feedback on student work is not always as timely as it could be, and that our communication with families could be improved, particularly on goal setting, positive accomplishments and positive behaviors.

Certainly, no school is perfect; there are always challenges and ways to improve. Your feedback will help to maintain our strengths while working to shore up our areas for improvement. We'll be doing the survey again in the spring to gauge our progress, but please don't hesitate to call, email or stop by at any time with your comments, questions, concerns or support. Thanks again for your feedback!

Science Fair!

Science fair is coming and we need judges! Please contact Mrs. Mann if you are interested in being a Science Fair judge between 12 pm and 3 pm on Tuesday, November 12th.

Lice

CVA Parents: A case of head lice has been reported by a CVA family. The student was treated during the MEA week and should not have come in to contact with other CVA students or staff during that time. However, please take precautions and check your students to ensure that lice do not spread. For more information, click here.

Science Pets

Do you love pets? Our science classroom has five of them! If you would like to donate to help keep our critters healthy and happy we are looking for...

  •  Rats: rat food, treats, bedding , "igloos," large rat ball
  •  Leopard Gecko: mealworms, crickets, calcium powder
  •  Turtles: food, water treatment liquid, treats
Send the donated items with your student to drop off in the Science classroom. Our critters appreciate it!

November Lunch

and Pizza Orders

Lunch orders for November are due in the office by October 30th.  Click here for a copy of the form.

Lunch orders are collected each month, and lunches will be delivered to the school each Monday and Tuesday for the students who ordered a lunch for that day. Hot lunches cost $4.25 each.

All Monday and Tuesday hot lunches must be pre-ordered and pre-paid! Please do not send money with your child in the morning to purchase a lunch for that same day.

Pizza Wednesdays will continue offering cheese and pepperoni pizza for $3 per slice or 2 slices for $5. However, students are requested to pay in advance into a lunch account using the attached order form rather than bring cash each week.

Milk is also available daily at a cost of $0.05 to students. Students can sign up for milk in advance, or purchase it daily.

Washington DC Meeting

There will be a meeting for families of students going to Washington D.C. on Monday, November 5 at 4:00 in room 217 (Robyn's Classroom).  If you are still interested in going on the trip, but haven't signed up yet, please free to attend the meeting as well.

Chinook Book Fundraiser

This year, CVA sold the Chinook Book for our first school-wide fundraiser. These coupon books have a green focus and feature great local restaurants, grocers, boutiques, hardware stores, entertainment venues, and more! To get a sneak peak at all of the great deals in this book, you can visit the Chinook Book website. Chinook Books are for sale for $20 and mobile coupon packs for use with smart phones are new this year and sell for $14.

Though October 24th has come and gone, any students who still have Chinook Book orders to turn in can still do so! Please have students bring in any remaining orders with payments by October 30th. Contact Melissa in the office if you have any questions.

Fidgety Fairy Tales

Once upon a time, familiar fairy tales were re-imagined to show positive portrayals of children with mental health disorders to raise awareness and reduce stigma! These original hour-long musical theatre productions are performed by a talented cast of actors ages 9 - 18 both with and without mental health disorders.

Annual Spaghetti Dinner

and Silent Auction

CVA 8th graders will once again be putting on their annual SPAGHETTI DINNER and SILENT AUCTION here at CVA to help cover the cost for Eagle Bluff (the annual 8th grade end of the year field trip)! The date and time for this year's event is Thursday, November 1st  from 6:30pm - 8:30pm. Please mark this date down on your calendar as this is an event for the entire CVA community.  Feel free to bring family and friends. As in the past, we will offer gluten free and vegetarian options as well as traditional meat sauce.

The cost is $5 per person or $20 for a family of 4 or more; checks payable to CVA. To purchase tickets you can either buy at the door, from Melissa in her office, or contact any CVA 8th grader. (This method is preferred so we can plan for the correct amount of food and have limited waste).

We are looking for donations from the following list. (We usually have around 150-200 people):

  • Spaghetti Sauce
  • Uncooked Spaghetti noodles
  • Uncooked gluten free spaghetti noodles
  • Precooked Meatballs
  • Parmesan Cheese
  • Lemonade
  • Coffee
  • Paper Plates and Cups
  • Plastic Forks and Knives
  • Napkins
  • Silent Auction Items

We are also looking for parent volunteers to help donate cooked noodles. Please let us know if you would like to help!

This year the 8th graders have decided to try and conduct the spaghetti dinner in a more eco friendly way. We are asking that families, if possible, bring their own re-useable dishes, silverware and glasses. The 8th graders will provide a washing/drying station for the dishes as well. (The 8th graders will do the washing and drying!) If you are unable to bring your own dishware, don't worry we will still serve you!!

Click here for a list of the Silent Auction items we have received so far.

If you have any questions please contact Ms. Jane, Mrs. Koenen or Mrs. Mann.

MYP@CVA

Although not all units that CVA teachers teach are IB-Middle Years Program units, those that are share several characteristics. They help students develop higher order thinking skills, contain goal-setting and reflection to help students actively connect to the content, and they have a unit question. The unit question helps to create the need to know. Several MYP units are taking place in your 6th-8th grade children's classrooms right now. Here they are with their unit questions:

Arts: Jennifer Naglak

Levels 1/2 - Music Sounds like Music - When do sounds become more than sounds?

Levels 3/3+ - From Point A to Point B and How We Get There - Does history recreate itself? What can we learn from looking at change through time?

Humanities: Allissa Koenen

Level 1 - River of Life - What do people expect from a leader?

Level 2 - Every Immigrant has Two Lives - How do we stay true to ourselves?

Level 3 - Defining Features - How are we the product of our environment?

Level 3+ - Europe Reborn: The Renaissance - How can you represent culture through art?

Language B: Lauren Odle

Level 1 - La Familia - What makes a family strong?

Level 2 - Amigos - What is a good friend like?

Level 3 - Who's the boss of me? - How do we take care of ourselves?

Level 3 + - La Conquista - Who are the good guys?

Mathematics: Robyn Mesenbring

Geometry - Using the Tool of Geometry - How can you precisely create?

Technology: Patty McDonald

Levels 1 - 3/3+ - How to .... -  What steps will help me create?

Ask your children what they can tell you about the MYP units and unit questions in their classrooms.  For more information about MYP and IB programs, go to http://www.ibo.org or contact Cherie Neima.
