"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man."
-John F. Kennedy
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you- ask what you can do for your country." This is a profound quote I heard this past Sunday in church down in my home country in Trinidad. I sat in the pew and really focused on my prayer. I felt a calling that I wanted to help my country and hometown country in Trinidad. I felt compelled to do more for those who are in need. When the Reverend quoted J.F.K it was truly a sign and confirmation that I needed to do more because of the memory of my Mother the patriotism she exhibited throughout my childhood.
From many years of growing up in Trinidad, I remember my Mother's true affirmation for the Kennedy's. I vividly remember when J.F.K. was assassinated and the true sadness that spread throughout the world. Being from Trinidad, we were still very connected to American politics and the lives of the Kennedy's. We still have the old newspapers that remembered and honored the assassination of the influential leader.
Since I moved here from Trinidad many years ago, the theme of patriotism has always represented such an influential aspect in my life here. The theme of patriotism has always been strong in this country due to strong leadership and the foundation for which this country was birthed.
After having moved to Boston from Trinidad 24 years ago, I had been very interested in viewing the Kennedy Memorial in Washington D.C. Five years ago I was able to travel with my husband and two sons to the Arlington Cemetery to see the burning flame that honored John F. Kennedy's grave site. The feeling was indescribable. It was such a powerful moment that my family was able to share together.
When I was pregnant with my first son, Christian, my mother had passed when I was only six months along. I truly believe that her patriotism and affinity for American history must have been passed through my first born. My son Christian has always been the little politician in the family. He practices his freedom and has a strong interest in American history and foundation of this nation.
This is why July has become one of my favorite months in The United States. I love how Americans celebrate their Independence Day on the 4th of July. I remind my two sons often that they have a great opportunity living in the United States.
This past visit to Trinidad was to surprise my brother David for his 40th Birthday Party. This was the first time all of the siblings were together in the same place since our brother Ralph's passing two and a half years ago. This past trip to Trinidad was such a blessing for me and I am so thankful I made the trip. After leaving Trinidad I feel very uplifted and even more focused on my mission.
While I was in Trinidad, I was able to visit my brother Steven's children home called Haven of Hope that was founded two years ago. There in Trinidad he supports thirteen children under the age of ten. By visiting, I realized there was such a need in my home country.
My younger brother Steven is so busy and has been so successful over the years.
He owns four branches of skincare businesses that specialize in spa and laser treatments called the Face and Body Clinic. However, the greatest work my brother has accomplished is helping those who are less fortunate. He has always worked so hard to care for so many. At times I think I am busy, but that is only until I spend a day walking in my brother Steven's shoes.
Allure Spa wishes you a Happy Fourth of July, and we pray your celebrations and time with friends and family is memorable!
