Greetings!
November is the month for celebrating everything from the 2012 election, Thanksgiving, family and the transition of autumnal weather to the cold winter air. I have so much to be thankful for this month and wanted to acknowledge the people that I have been so blessed to have in my life. Each person has such a special gift that they contribute in such unique ways. I am most grateful for my family, especially my husband Andy and my two sons, Christian and Silas. Through life's challenges we can always find comfort in each other. I am blessed to have a wonderful staff that have remained a team and have been loyal to Allure Spa for many years. I would also like to thank the clients, you have made Allure Spa possible. It has been a pleasure caring for the men and women that the spa and salon have serviced. It has been enjoyable to have met and connected with all the amazing clients, and be able to share stories throughout the years. The Allure Spa Staff and I hope that you and your families were safe during Hurricane Sandy this past week. We continue to keep New York, New Jersey and other areas that were affected, in our thoughts and prayers. On Monday, October 29th, I sat at the front desk of Allure Spa with Ellen awaiting Hurricane Sandy to make its way to Quincy. At around 10:00 a.m. we noticed the high winds bellow through Quincy Avenue. I watched our black sign out front swing frantically from side to side. A few minutes later I heard a loud bang and felt the ground shake. I jolted out of my seat and ran to the window to see the power pole next to our building fall onto the electrical wires next to our building. Ellen immediately dialed 911 and within minutes all of Quincy Avenue was blocked off, and the Fire Department, National Grid, police and onlookers filled the street. We were all requested to stay in our building while the hanging, hazardous electrical wires were barely holding the power pole up. The fire fighters asked for our clients and employees to immediately evacuate the building, and to keep our cars on the street while the electrical wires and telephone pole were repaired. My husband Andy had to pick me up to bring me home. I was in such a panic, that I forgot my pocket book and cell phone in Allure Spa. Two of my employees, Julianne and Molly had traveled to Nashville for the weekend and hoped to return to Boston on Monday night. They were able to get their original connecting flight to Charlotte, North Carolina but due to the storm, the next available flight from Charlotte to Boston would have been on Wednesday. I hadn't talked to Molly or Julianne because I had left my cell phone at the shop. Ironically, Julianne was looking through her Twitter news-feed in Charlotte which updated her on the status of the storm back home. She opened a tweet from Quincytweet with the picture shown below. She was amazed that of all pictures that were uploaded on the web from Quincy it was one from her work at Allure Spa. Julianne and Molly became very concerned and called Ellen and I to find the details and explanation of the telephone pole in the picture. Later that evening, Ellen, Savi, and Maura uploaded a similar picture to inform the staff of what had happened at the shop. It is amazing how technology can connect us and keep us informed so quickly. I have to admit it was nice to not be in contact with anyone for a day and that I could dedicate my time to my "boys". We watched movies and were all able to enjoy each others company. I am most grateful that we remained safe throughout the storm and felt that we were protected on that Monday. I am thankful for the help we received from the Quincy emergency team and National Grid. They had Allure Spa back up and running by Tuesday morning. It is getting close to Election Day which is such an exciting time for our nation. Whoever wins the primary, I am confident that our country will nominate a great leader. Many years ago I became a U.S. citizen after moving from Trinidad. I am proud to be an American citizen and love to show my patriotism by getting involved and voting. I strongly urged my son this year to register to vote and become involved while attending Gordon College. Allure Spa staff and I would like to wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving. Thank You and God Bless, Sandra Ishmael |
