Things You Should Know

Great Kolor, a small firm that offers discounts to CalNonprofits members on media displays, got CalNonprofits donated ad space inside and on the "tails" of SF Muni buses and AC Transit buses in the East Bay. WOW!



On June 30, the U.S. Department of Labor released a proposed rule that would increase the number of workers eligible to receive overtime pay. The proposal would require a minimum salary of $50,400 ($970 a week) for a position to be classified as exempt. Currently the minimum threshold is $23,660 ($455 a week). Read more

The San Bernardino Symphony has received a $70,000 grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. Funds will go toward the production of the Symphony's December and February concerts. 
Up and Down the Scale

Former ACSO Board Member Joan Cumming was appointed vice president of marketing and communications at the San Diego Symphony, beginning August 31. Cumming is currently vice president of public relations and communications at the Music Center of Los Angeles County. She has served in similar position with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Opera. 

Shelly Gilbride has accepted the position of programs officer at the California Arts Council. For the past year, Gilbride has served as an arts program specialist, and continues to serve as the co-coordinator for the Poetry Out Loud program. 



Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla has been promoted from assistant conductor to associate conductor at the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Grazinyte-Tyla studied choral music at the University of Music and Fine Arts in Graz, Austria.



Scott Harrison has been appointed executive director of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra (LACO). Harrison, who assumes post in October, Joins LACO From Detroit Symphony Orchestra where he served as vice president for advancement & external relations. 




Margaret Holsinger has been named executive assistant and outreach program manager for the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Holsinger served as an events and office manager at Elite Meetings International in Santa Barbara. 



Sue Mudge was appointed director of community engagement at the Carmel Bach Festival, beginning September 15. Mudge has been a Festival musician for 30 years, and will continue to lead Tower Music.



Leslie Velez is the new director of development for the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra. Previously she served as director of individual giving at the Santa Monica Museum of Art and held a sales position at Paige's Music in Indianapolis and Nick Rail Music in Santa Barbara. She holds a bachelor's degree in music performance from Indianapolis' Butler University as well as a master's degree in specialized journalism from the University of Southern California, and has completed training at the Grantsmanship Center in Los Angeles.

The Oakland East Bay Symphony has reverted to its previous name, the Oakland Symphony.

Former music director of the American Youth Symphony Alexander Treger has formed the Young Artists Symphony Orchestra, a new orchestra for pre-professional musicians. The orchestra received funding from an education foundation, and will bring together musicians aged 15-26, drawn from schools and conservatoires across the region. Peter Pastriech, Joseph Scafidi, Brent Assink
Joe Scafidi, ACSO board member in the 70s and past San Francisco Symphony executive director, passed away on August 17 in Sonoma. Mr. Scafidi held many positions at the Symphony from 1939 to 1978 starting as a volunteer usher and ultimately ending as executive director. He was 94.
