Music in the Mountains Innovative Youth Music Program

Partnering with Sierra Streams Institute, Music in the Mountains created a youth program meant to blend a musical experience with environmental science. This resulted in a program that took 27 young musicians to the Yuba River to study the annual salmon run and create an original composition. Working with MIM Executive Director Cristine Kelly, they created a documentary entitled

River Music that is now receiving attention from PBS stations in Sacramento and New York.

The documentary will air locally in Sacramento on September 24, 26 and 28, and will be on national broadcast Saturday, September 27.

Arts Funding on LA County Ballot

On the upcoming November 4 ballot, LA County residents will vote on whether to absorb $23 in annual per-parcel property taxes over the next 30 years for improvements to various county facilities, among them the art venues in county, municipal, and state parks.

This would extend an existing tax passed in 1992 and 1996, which has had an estimated yield of $63.6 million for the arts and culture. The proposition needs a 2/3 majority to pass.

Major beneficiaries of the 1992 and 1996 tax are the Hollywood Bowl, California Science Center, LACMA, The Natural History Museum, The California African American Museum, and the Music Center.

Music Notes

Prominent California artist John "Jack" Johannsen passed away recently, just after donating one of his final pieces to be auctioned off at an upcoming fundraiser for the Folsom Symphony. Folsom Symphony's September 27 gala, "Evening Under the Stars," auctions off many rare items, including Johannsen's piece, "Symphony Blue." The Folsom Telegraph published an article about Johannsen's passing.

Music in the Mountains was a lucky recipient of a $230,000 gift by J. David Ramsey, who has also bequeathed over
$1 million to classical music organizations in the Sacramento region. Mr. Ramsey was a patron and supporter of Music in the Mountains during his life, and continues to be an advocate for the arts after his death.
