Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera Cancels Season

 

Due to financial and leadership troubles, the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera has cancelled its 2014-15 season. This comes even after the organization received a $500,000 gift from the Joyce and Jim Teel Foundation in January. The Sacramento Bee reports that, "This fall, Sacramento will be the only U.S. city of comparable size without an active symphony orchestra."

Sing in Carnegie Hall!


SF to Carnegie is a project under the direction of Ragnar Bohlin, chorus director of the San Francisco Symphony, in which Bay Area amateur singers may apply to perform Mozart's Great Mass in C minor at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, May 3, 2015. The full experience includes:

  • One performance on stage at Carnegie Hall, under the direction of Ragnar Bohlin, accompanied by a professional orchestra and professional soloists.
  • At least three rehearsals with Maestro Bohlin in New York.
  • Three rehearsals in San Francisco with Maestro Bohlin during the spring of 2015.

Music Notes

Claremont Graduate University has received funding from The Ralph M. Parsons Foundation to provide a full scholarship to its M.A. in Arts Management program. The program is launching a national search to find the Parsons Fellow who will be the recipient of this opportunity beginning in January 2015.


Ten Los Angeles Philharmonic concerts from the current Hollywood Bowl season will be broadcast on Classical KUSC beginning Sunday, August 10 at 7:00 PM. This is the eighth year of the orchestra's summer partnership with the Los Angeles listener-sponsored classical music radio station.

 

The Marin Symphony reports record-breaking contributions and a surplus for the first time in several years as it concluded its 2014 fiscal year on June 30, 2014. The organization has also received an anonymous $250,000 unrestricted gift.

 

The Orange County Women's Chorus has been named as one of two Outstanding Arts Organizations by Arts Orange County.The official presentation will be at the 15th Annual Orange County Arts Awards on October 22.

 

Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra is currently on an east coast tour that will include performances of Handel's Acis and Galatea (arr. Mozart) with the Mark Morris Dance Group at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival; Handel's opera Teseo at the Mostly Mozart Festival and at the Tanglewood Festival; and a special concert at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival featuring Teseo excerpts. The NY Times recently published an article about the Orchestra's activities.

 

The Santa Rosa Symphony has announced four new appointments to its board of directors. They are Eileen Carlisle and Mark Jacobson of Santa Rosa, Betha MacClain of Sebastopol, and Jay Zhong (Orchestra Representative) of Napa. 

 

The Santa Rosa Youth Orchestra is holding auditions for all orchestral instruments. 2014-15 season highlights include Weill Hall performances, a residency with violinist Lindsay Deutsch, and a tour to China in June 2015.

 
ACSO Up and Down the Scale

Martha Gilmer has been named chief executive officer of the San Diego Symphony effective September 24, 2014. Ms. Gilmer is currently The Richard and Mary L. Gray Chair -VP Artistic Planning and Audience Development at the Chicago Symphony, where she has worked for the past 35 years in various roles.




The Los Angeles Philharmonic announced the appointment of former Dudamel Fellow Mirga Grazinytė-Tyla as assistant conductor of the LA Phil for a two-year term. She will lead performances of the orchestra at both the Hollywood Bowl, the Philharmonic's summer home, and at Walt Disney Concert Hall. As part of her duties, Ms. Grazinytė-Tyla will also serve as the cover conductor for music director Gustavo Dudamel and guest conductors throughout the orchestra's subscription season and on tour. 

Nicholas McGegan, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra's music director of the past 29 years, has renewed his contract through 2020. Mr. McGegan will continue to play a central role in planning the Orchestra's future, from its season in the Bay Area to recordings, collaboration, tours, and all areas related to the Orchestra's artistic vision. 


 


 

Reuben Roque�i will join The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation as a program officer in the Performing Arts Program beginning September 2. Since 2010, Roque�i has worked as program director at the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation (NACF), a national indigenous arts foundation based in Vancouver, Wash. 
 


 

 

ACSO executive assistant Garrett Shatzer will be leaving his position this month to become the annual fund manager at Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. Mr. Shatzer joined ACSO in October 2013 after finishing his Ph.D. in music composition at UC Davis and has maintained a full composing slate since embarking on his career in arts administration.



The Michigan Philharmonic has announced a three-year renewal of Nan Washburn's contract as music director and conductor. Now entering her sixteenth season with the orchestra, Ms. Washburn's orchestral programming has garnered nineteen ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music. 




The Livermore-Amador Symphony has named Lara Webber as its music director and conductor. Ms. Webber's previous positions include assistant and associate conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, associate conductor of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Chorus. She has also served as cover conductor for the San Francisco Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra.
