Inspiring the Creative Economy

Craig Watson, director of the California Arts Council, wrote a feature for the magazine Western City about how cities increase economic activity through innovation and the arts. The essay contains many wonderful ideas and is highly recommended reading for all ACSO members.

Mr. Watson (center) with the ACSO Board.

Mr. Watson stopped by the May 5th ACSO Board meeting in Sacramento to speak about the current cross-section of the arts and politics in our state. He spoke at length about the recent news that the California Arts Council has teamed with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) to bring Arts-in-Corrections programs back to CA State Prisons. The CDCR has committed $1 million to the program.

Action Alert

Like thousands of other nonprofits in the arts, education, and human services, and other community organizations, most of America's orchestras are classified as 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. If it were not for this provision and the deductibility of private donations, orchestras and many other charitable organizations, would be unable to serve community needs. Urge Congress to support reinstatement of the IRA Charitable Rollover and increase support for America's nonprofit community.

Please visit the League of American Orchestras' website to sign the petition.
