Good Job ACSO from the Eureka Symphony

Thank you so much for your help with our efforts to improve and grow our Symphony. As you know, we used ACSO funds to use Jane Hill to shepherd us through the process of creating a 3 year Strategic Plan.

We realized upon completion of this plan that our organization has grown too big and complicated for a working volunteer board to handle and have hired a part time Executive Director. Jane Hill has accepted our offer and will be with us for the next year and perhaps for two years. Eureka Symphony is 20 years old and has grown and changed tremendously since the beginning. We are excited for the next 20 years of Eureka Symphony and feel with Jane's help we will just get better and better.

Sincerely,
Pam Cahill, Board President

Bad News on NEA Front

The Obama Administration released its FY 2015 budget request to Congress, and it includes $146 million for the NEA, down from the $154 million request the previous year. Fight for increased funding by joining the Americans for the Arts Action Fund or signing a petition.

Former Peninsula Symphony North Director Jailed on Embezzlement Charges

Stephen Jay Carlton was arrested on charges of embezzlement, grand theft, forgery, identity theft, and tax evasion in connection with the draining of the Symphony's accounts - including a $500,000 endowment - last fall. He faces up to 18 years in prison if convicted. (Full Story, San Jose Mercury News)

ACSO will be offering an Ask an Expert Webinar on how to avoid such situations on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Pacific. Mark your calendars now; registration will begin in April.

Up & Down the Scale

Russell Kelban has been appointed to chief marketing director of the San Francisco Symphony. Mr. Kelban was most recently senior vice president of marketing for Paramount Home Media Distribution, and before that held positions at Universal Pictures, The Walt Disney Company, and Turner Broadcasting.

Former ACSO Board member Stacey Street is leaving her position of capital and major gifts director at Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific to become the new chief development officer for the Richmond Community Foundation. Ms. Street was formerly executive director of the California Symphony and development and marketing director for the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.

Music Notes

The California Youth Symphony has had two of its musicians chosen to participate in the 120-member National Youth Orchestra (performing at the Green Music Center during the ACSO Conference). Co-concertmaster Helen Wu and co-principal bass Janice Gho will embark on a national tour with conductor David Robertson and violinist Gil Shaham. In other news, the Symphony will be touring Prague and the Adriatic Coast in June with conductor Leo Eylar.

The Pacific Symphony's newest CD will be released by Naxos on March 25. The disc features the three-part oratorio "Toward a Season of Peace" by Richard Danielpour, which was commissioned by the Symphony in 2012.

The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors recognized the San Luis Obispo Symphony for its leadership in music education by proclaiming March 31, 2014 "San Luis Obispo County Music Education Day" in honor of Michael Nowak's 30th Anniversary Season as music director of the Symphony.
