An Arts Symposium, Free Online
 

The California Arts Council has teamed with the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF), Frank Gehry Partners, and Charter Communications to live-stream the 15th Annual WESTAF Cultural Policy Symposium on March 4, 2014, 8:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. PST. The topic is Creativity and Innovation in Public Education: Areas of Need, Mechanisms of Change.

 
TWO Bills to Fund CAC
 

State Senator Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) announced that he would submit a bill that would commit $25 million a year to the CAC. Additionally, Assemblymember Ian Calderon introduced Assembly Bill 1662, a measure that appropriates funding for grant programs that increase access to the arts for all Californians. Both of these pushes follow the release of the Otis Report, a statewide study focusing on how jobs in the arts and other creative fields figure in California's overall economy.

 

The 6-Minute Pitch, Arts Style
 

Based on the hit TV show Shark Tank, last year Arizona launched Arizona Art Tank, a funding initiative of the Arizona Commission on the Arts that makes strategic investments in Arizona's best arts-based entrepreneurial ventures. As noted on Barry's Blog, top applicants were given six minutes each to pitch an arts-based venture to an expert panel and live audience. At the end of each evening, panels awarded top-scoring applicants with seed-funding of between $4,000 and $10,000.

Arthur P. Barnes, music director and conductor of the Livermore-Amador Symphony since 1964, will retire in June. Barnes is Professor (Performance) of Music Emeritus, Stanford University. His final  concert in May will premier "California Golden Suite, which Barnes composed for the occasion. Upon retirement, he will become music director emeritus, and an Association Student Award will be granted annually in his honor. 

 

Courtney Beck has been promoted from director of development to associate executive director at the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra  in SF. Before joining the Orchestra in 2007, Ms. Beck was the associate director of development at SF Jazz and a co-founder of a development and marketing consulting firm where she worked with such clients as the Kennedy Center and the Chicago Symphony.

 

President Obama has announced his intent to nominate Jane Chu as Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. Dr. Chu has been the president and CEO of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, Missouri, since 2006. Before that she held positions at Union Station Kansas City and the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation.



The Center for Volunteer and Nonprofit Leadership has named
Cindi Hubbard the new director of executive search and transition services. As the owner of Cindi Hubbard & Associates, Ms. Hubbard has worked with organizations such as the League of American Orchestras and the EarShot New Music Reading Network and orchestras ranging from the Fresno Philharmonic to the San Francisco Symphony. Prior to starting her consulting practice, she worked as a staff member with the San Francisco Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the National Symphony Orchestra, and The Women's Philharmonic.
 
Robert Tannenbaum has resigned as general director of the Sacramento Philharmonic & Opera  effective April 6, 2014. Rob joined shortly after the merging of Sacramento's Opera and Philharmonic Orchestra seven months ago.  
Music Notes

Orchestra Santa Monica has announced three additions to its Board of Directors: attorney George Collins, public relations executive Barbara Bishop, and publisher T.J. Montemer.
 
The Pacific Symphony received a $2 million gift from long-time Board member James Emmi and his wife, Catherine, providing continued support for orchestral operations and endowment. Mr. Emmi has served on the Board for 23 years.

The Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra participated in a feature-length film, Playing Well With Others, with cellist Matt Haimovitz and conductor Benjamin Simon. The film is currently in circulation at some of the major US film festivals.

Pittance Chamber Music is a new ensemble comprised of members of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra and was founded by assistant concertmaster Lisa Sutton. Their goal is to explore the chamber music repertoire and to present their audiences with a variety of unique mixed ensembles.  
 
The San Francisco Symphony has launched the second generation of its award-winning education website SFSKids.org. The new SFSKids incorporates user-friendly educational game-play techniques to bring orchestral music to today's digitally-savvy children, and launches a new generation of music instruction tools for parents and teachers.
