LIVE FROM EUROPE         

The San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra released
its new recording Live at the Berlin Philharmonie, Mahler 

Symphony No. 1, on SFS Media, the San Francisco Symphony's in-house label, on May 14th from the San Francisco Symphony Store and the iTunes music store worldwide. The performance was captured live in concert on July 3, 2012, while the Youth Orchestra was on their most recent tour of Europe. sfsymphony.org/store 


OJAI 
ONLINE UNIVERSITY          

Ojai Music Festival's Online University is offering a free online course, consisting of three classes, centers on topics such as the role of context in music and the relationship between place, ideas, movement, and music. Using the music and ideas behind the 2013 Festival as examples, the course will explore music's role in contemporary culture. Guest instructors include Mark Morris, Thomas W. Morris, Ara Guzelimian, John Luther Adams, Jeremy Denk, Mark Swed, Eva Soltes, and John Rockwell. For more details, visit the OjaiU website.

SUMMER ACADEMY        
The Fresno Opera & Orchestra Summer Academy, created and led by artistic director Thomas Loewenheim (music director of Youth Orchestras of Fresno), offers a unique opportunity for orchestral musicians and aspiring singers to work side-by-side with professionals in producing three concerts - one at Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA, then two full operas at Fresno State - all in an intense atmosphere of daily rehearsals and focused instruction June 14-20, 2013.

Oakland Youth Orchestra will embark on a tour comprised of performances, community outreach and educational exchanges with other youth organizations in Argentina and Uruguay June 26 through July 4. There will be a free public "send-off" concert at Oakland City Center on June 21. For more information, visit oyo.org

 

Started in 2000, the Santa Maria Philharmonic Society announced they are "closing their doors" and dissolving the Society. Despite their well-received programs, the Society has been unable to secure donations, grants and bequests needed to enable them to move forward into another season in a fiscally responsible manner.

The Thousand Oaks Philharmonic is pleased

to announce that an alumni performer,

Sean Chen from Oak Park, has recently been awarded the prestigious 2013 Classical Fellowship sponsored by the American Pianists Association.

    
Gregory Cox has been appointed Pacific Symphony's new vice president for development.  Most recently, he held the position of vice president for development at KPCC-FM, Southern California's largest NPR-affiliate station.  Previously, he served in development leadership roles at the Long Beach Symphony, Cal State Long Beach, and Claremont Graduate School. 

 

John Farrer, who has conducted the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra as conductor for nearly half the life of the organization, will leave the podium after the 2013-14 season. "I am not retiring," Farrer stressed in an interview with The Californian. "I will continue my professional life full bore."
