Insights Distinguished Lecture Series
"Myth, Memory, and Identity:
Fort Lane and the Rogue River Wars"
Please join the Southern Oregon University community for the Spring 2012 Distinguished Lecture.
Dr. Mark Tveskov, SOU Professor of Anthropology April 18th, 2012 7:00-8:00pm Meese Conference Room, Hannon Library A Reception follows the presentation.
Why should we study archaeology? What do archaeologists actually do? In this spring's Distinguished Lecture, Professor Mark Tveskov will bring to life SOU's archaeological research at Fort Lane, a remote Army post on the frontier of the Oregon Territory. Despite its isolation and small complement of soldiers, Fort Lane played a significant role that affected the pioneers and indigenous peoples, nationalism and states-rights sentiments, developing federal policy -- and Oregon's history. In bringing this history to life, Professor Tveskov will highlight the archaeological work that helps us appreciate both the issues of the past and the complexities of the present.
