Teach a Course!

The heart of OLLI is our members, and especially those members who prepare and teach courses for the rest of us. OLLI at SOU offers a curriculum with courses of every sort. You can contribute to this.  If you've taught OLLI courses before, consider offering one again this fall. And if you haven't taught an OLLI course, but have a topic area in mind, let's talk.

Course proposals are due June 1. Proposals submitted after that date will be considered only if time and space allow. Late proposals will not be reviewed until all on-time proposals have been reviewed and classroom assignments have been made. So please visit our website and complete a Course Proposal Form as soon as possible. http://sou.edu/olli/teach.shtml (see links to form at bottom of the page)

Curriculum Committee members are available to discuss the course you have in mind.  Please contact the Chair of the Curriculum Committee, Bill Hering at bh@ashlandnet.net  or call Bill at 541-488-5886, anytime.
SOAR Events in Medford

The following two events are part of SOAR (Southern Oregon Arts & Research), SOU's fourth annual celebration of faculty and student work. In previous years SOAR has only been on the Ashland campus, but now it's part of the Medford campus too - and we really want to welcome OLLI's Medford students to join in!

McNair Scholars present their work on May 20, 1:30-3:00pm, Room 132 (Presentation Hall) at the HEC. McNair participants are from disadvantaged backgrounds who have demonstrated strong academic potential; they are encouraged and supported toward doctoral programs during their undergraduate studies. For more information on the McNair program, see http://www.sou.edu/mcnair/overview.html. We are delighted to offer these students an avenue to present their research, but we very much need an audience for them! OLLI members are invited to hear the research findings, offer encouragement to the students, and enjoy the company of other OLLI members too. Refreshments will be served.

Betty LaDuke is honored at a reception on May 20, 5:00-6:30pm, Room 129 (Multipurpose Room) at the HEC. Betty is an internationally-known artist and SOU Professor Emerita whose vibrant work inspires both pleasure and mystery in the viewer. Come meet Betty, and hear directly from her about the people and places that have inspired her work. Refreshments will be served. Afterward, continue your cultural indulgence with a stroll through downtown Medford for its 3rd Friday Artwalk. Shops are open late, with displays by local artists and tastings of local food/wine.

SOAR events will be held in Ashland on May 17th through May 19thCampus Lab and Studio Open Houses are being held on May 17th from 3-5:00. On May 18th, University Seminar Symposium: Presentations and Performances will be held at the Stevenson Union and Hannon Library. On May 19th, art exhibitions and demonstrations will be held from 9:00-4:00 in the Stevenson Union, Hannon Library and the Center for the Visual Arts. OLLI Greeters will be available in several of the open houses. Please plan on attending.

Homeless Youth
Monday, May 23, 1-3 p.m.
RCC/SOU Higher Education Center, Medford

The story of homeless youth in Jackson County is the topic of our next community forum. Staff from the national award-winning Maslow Project will describe their outreach to these mostly invisible kids. And, a formerly homeless youth will talk about what it is like to be on the streets through circumstances beyond his/her control. The Maslow Project will expand into Ashland later this year.Come and learn how current economic and social changes have altered the help available to youth and what motivated persons do to assist.
