Stretching your stress out- meet your psoas

One muscle that is still shrouded in mystery is this deep hip flexor. For a long time the importance of this deep core muscle was overlooked, but lately, yoga teachers and body workers are starting to see the relevance of the psoas muscle and its effect on its "owner."

As many people in the Western world have a lifestyle or work life that gets quite stressful and involves a lot of sitting, this muscle is getting to be a major player in our physical, mental and emotional well being.

Most people walk around with a tight psoas and are not aware of it. Luckily, practicing yoga helps to open this muscle to a great extent.

Een aantal jaar geleden zegde ze haar goede baan op om zich volledig op yoga te richten. Inmiddels geeft ze alweer vijf jaar (ashtanga) les. Iets wat ze met veel passie en toewijding doet. Zo besteedt ze dagelijks zo'n 3 uur aan haar eigen practice. En dat voelen haar studenten ook; haar lessen zijn immers zeer populair. Hoog tijd om Ingeborg beter te leren kennen!

'Ik heb altijd veel gezwommen en hierdoor was mijn lichaam jaren lang één bonk spier. Ik vond mijn eigen practice daardoor in het begin best lastig. Dit werd nog eens bemoeilijkt doordat ik alles rationeel oploste. Verdriet, pijn of woede stopte ik weg en dat zette zich vast in mijn lijf.'

'Ik probeerde veel op
kracht in houdingen komen, bijvoorbeeld in parivrtta parschvakonasana. Bij heupopeners kwamen de tranen. Inmiddels weet ik dat je adem de verbinding is tussen lijf, mind en energie en dat de asana's je lijf helen. Nu neem ik de ruimte en rust en gebruik ik mijn ademhaling om in een houding te komen.'
