Body-cam Survey
States are rapidly developing new legislation regarding body-cam video.  Should such video be open to the public?  Should people's privacy be respected even during a police investigation?

Share your thoughts in this survey,  see the results including what systems agencies are using and help your legislators work through this issue carefully. Monitor the results here.

PUBLIC RECORDS LAWS RAPIDLY CHANGING AROUND THE COUNTRY
Public records laws are rapidly changing in America.

ILLINOIS
Effective 2015, Illinois has made significant changes to what agencies can charge for records and the procedures for releasing records.

CALIFORNIA
Changes have been proposed to protect officers from liability stemming from video recordings.

COLORADO
On its way to become the first state law affirming the right of the public to record and video police, House Bill 1290 was given final approval by the House on May 2nd.
.
WEST VIRGINIA
In April, West Virginia House Bill 2636 was passed amending what fees can be charged for FOIA requests.

Technology News
  • Valdosta Police expand paperless reporting system and connect with court and prosecutors office.
  • Ohio biometric criminal background system flawed according to report. Operated by the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) in the office of Attorney General Mike DeWine, the report claims that the system has been plagued with various problems within the 15 years it has been in operation including falsely indicating that thousands of criminals have clean records.
  • Memphis open records system needs work. Deficiencies in the city's public records process stem from inefficient processes, a lack of understanding of open records laws by citizens and city employees, and "a growing distrust between the public records staff at various levels of city government and the local media," according to a new report. (Records Room Editor Note: should have turned to PRI for help;)
